@bkuhn @copiesofcopies While I appreciate being forthcoming, you are correct, I don't agree with feeding the torment nexus to defeat the torment nexus. I think using Claude is just helping them build more torment nexus, while normalize a situation that puts us in a legally dubious situation where we were previously relatively legally strong, and eroding community trust and shared understanding in the process.
FediDevs
These are the people building the Fediverse!
We are more in agreement than you realize:
I guess now is a good as time as any: I am using #Anthropic's #Claude on a weekly basis to both help me figure out what types of policies we should set for reasonable & ethical use of #LLMGenAI in #FOSS, & also to actually improve FOSS codebases.
I believe firmly that there is nothing wrong with using proprietary technologies as long as our eyes are on the prize of defeating those technologies.
@cwebber, I'm sure, doesn't agree.
@pds.dad
we need to add this for wafrn yep

@bkuhn @copiesofcopies I think the situation is more acceptable when using fully "local models", it doesn't erase all the concerns, but it at least improves user agency and autonomy. But overall, "local models" are mostly for "localwashing"; people like to bring them up as an alternative that nobody uses. Likewise, using LLMs to *find problems*, I don't have a problem with; search-space usage is one thing, but generative is another, in terms of social impact.
I also think that there are ways to improve the reliability of these systems, make them cheaper, and understandability of what they are doing, with neurosymbolic approaches, but that work hasn't advanced yet, and the current situation is pretty dismal. I really don't believe that we can vibe our way out of this mess, and I'm afraid we're going to see important projects, including Linux, head down the vibe bobsled https://dustycloud.org/blog/faulty-towers-vibe-sickness-and-the-vibe-bobsled/
@bkuhn @copiesofcopies
I think we should be pushing back on these things. I'm worried and dissappointed that FOSS leadership isn't. I'm really worried we might never recover from the damage that's already been done.
bluesky is having a downtime. and its not affecting wafrn instances. just as a reminder
its like if atproto was somehow decentralised right?

Hack & Craft, our online crafting and coding circle! Today from 14:00-16:00 ET (18:00-20:00 UTC)! https://fossandcrafts.org/hack-and-craft/
I'll be working on doing "set design" in Blender!
Hi All! We've got a Hack & Craft today from 14:00-16:00 ET (18:00-20:00 UTC).
I hope you'll join us: https://bbb.sfconservancy.org/b/chr-4fm-amb-air
I've got two projects I'm working on today:
- I'm finishing up two seat belt covers/cushions (one for me for my allergies and the other for a friend who is getting top surgery)
- I'm making two over-shirts out of this lovely thick quilted knit cotton fabric!
the rapture doesn’t work if you’re indoors. so if you’re in Costco and you get raptured, then you’ll just hit the ceiling like a helium balloon
Huge news! End-to-end-encrypted relays (via the Noise protocol) comes to Spritely Goblins and OCapN! https://spritely.institute/news/end-to-end-encrypted-relays-for-ocapn.html
Relays are federated (there is no "official relay", you can easily run your own) but also oblivious, and merely manage routing encrypted messages. A big milestone!
@cwebber hope you dont mind that i have no clue what this is and i just boosted it cause the animation is so cute
@tibi2 I don't mind at all! I'm glad you enjoyed the animation!
@Wtebbens In case you hadnt seen, that article is also available as a web page -https://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Features/How-the-Fediverse-Found-Parts-for-Its-Platforms
Mastodon admins, if you're looking for a way to find/report accounts affected by the current spam wave, you can run the query below. There may be some false positives, but the results are largely accurate. The query identifies accounts your instance has seen where the account has dropped a share.google link and tagged at least 10 people, excluding deleted or suspended accounts.
Drop into the DB first (sudo -u mastodon psql mastodon_production) and run:
WITH bounds AS (
SELECT ((extract(epoch FROM timestamptz '2026-10-15 00:00:00-04') * 1000)::bigint << 16) AS min_id
),
counts AS (
SELECT m.status_id, COUNT(*) AS mention_count
FROM mentions m, bounds b
WHERE m.status_id >= b.min_id
GROUP BY m.status_id
HAVING COUNT(*) >= 10
)
SELECT s.id,
s.created_at,
a.username || COALESCE('@' || a.domain, '') AS author,
c.mention_count,
COALESCE(s.url, s.uri) AS link
FROM counts c
JOIN statuses s ON s.id = c.status_id
JOIN accounts a ON a.id = s.account_id
WHERE s.deleted_at IS NULL
AND a.suspended_at IS NULL
AND (s.text ILIKE '%share.google%' OR s.spoiler_text ILIKE '%google%')
ORDER BY s.created_at DESC;
@stefano@bsd.cafe @feoh@fediverse.feoh.org Thanks. I dare not risk it then
@hypolite @nyrath @swope Yeah, Chinese cultural influence has been hampered by censorship restrictions.
In the meantime, everyone (including in asia) goes ga ga over Japanese anime/manga. Which is pretty funny and weird if you're at all aware how COMPLETELY it was all focused entirely upon domestic consumption.
Japan is "winning" at cultural hegemony without even trying. It must drive the older folks who remember the bad old WWII days absolutely bonkers.
Ah wait I prolly should have limited this to just wafrn lmao, this is about wafrn specifically not bsky
@starcrater21@app.wafrn.net
I am afraid we only control wafrn stuff in these regards
In other stuff we are working to make them available on bsky (right now polls using existing standards, next custom emojis with bluemoji
and after that we plan to write our own standard for asks
@neodb that's unrelated. anyone can make a google share link redirector url. This is nothing new.
Both things happening at the same time is just a coincidence, I think
@thibaultmol ahh, make sense. thank you.
