"Mastodon" is a registered trademark owned by Mastodon GmbH. It would be very unwise to try to use it as a category name, because the trademark might one day end up in the wrong hands. (In case people want real world examples of this happening in the FOSS world, trademarks are why Jabber lost its name and ended up being called XMPP.)
"Fediverse" isn't owned by anyone, isn't used in any other context, and it is already in wide use on the network. It's a much better option for the overall network's name.
🚃 A glimpse into a bygone era and forgotten childhood memories. These trams were a popular part of Blackpool seaside holidays for generations of families.
After their retirement from service, they were stored awaiting restoration in a compound at Fleetwood Docks.
Sadly, most of them ended up scrapped or scavenged for parts when the heritage group disbanded.

Meta's Oversight Board is conducting research to provide guidance to the technology industry on how to use large language models (LLMs) for content moderation on social media platforms in a way that respects free expression, reduces harm and adheres to recognized human rights standards.
@vs_everyone putting aside their differences to confront the Mom threat... but it will not be enough...
I was entertaining the assertion I recently heard that soon, very soon, there will be on the order of trillions of cognitive entities on the planet that are non-subjective, but otherwise of human capacity or greater
and I thought of a chapter I once wrote on “the eclipse of human discretion”
and I thought of the “information mechanics” in Greg Bear’s “Blood Music,” and how in that novel the fabric of reality collapsed when it was pinned down too closely by too many observers
and I realized that in any meaningful sense every word that ever issues from me from now down through the last of my days will be primarily read by an audience of machines
and then I stopped thinking, put on Swans and did a few solid sets of skullcrushers, and by the time M. Gira got to the really soaring bit of “I Am A Tower” everything started to feel OK again.
Time Square, a man stands next to a handcart filled with the various pieces of a Bumblebee Transformer costume.
Just learned that All Things Open is coming up. I don't know how I never know about these things. I'm just not tuned into events, and there's nobody to tell me.
I would have loved to ship some Owncast swag to somebody attending to drop off for attendees, but it's too late now.
It would make a lot of sense for me to attend these things myself in the future, but there's no way to afford it.

I maintain that the requirement in ActivityPub for activities to have unique, de-referenceable, persistent IDs is one of the major faults with it as a protocol.
I get why, if you are working in JSON-LD terms, it makes sense, but from a protocol perspective it is bizarre.

"As of Oct. 5, the last day of trading for WBD and Paramount Skydance (PSKY) on Nasdaq, Warner Bros. Discovery had a market capitalization of $77.7 billion and Paramount was around $11 billion. Today, Skydance has a market cap of under $40 billion — less than half the predecessor companies’ combined value."
@jalefkowit is that good?
Gods I dislike programming in golang.
Today is FORTRAN’s 70th birthday; its reference manual “appeared in a glossy cover, handsomely printed, with the date October 15, 1956.” https://softwarepreservation.computerhistory.org/FORTRAN/paper/p25-backus.pdf
(The actual software wasn’t released till the following year)
No longer fashionable but still, one of computer programming’s biggest success stories. I tip my hat.
@timbray FORTRAN was a required course when I studied Physics at Berkeley in the 80s and 90s.
