Seeing the damage that "AI" is doing to the Kernel (not just in Slop code being integrated that will bite us later but in making becoming a new kernel developer even harder than it is at a time where we should really be thinking about how to fill that pipeline) is super painful.
I think that - like Wikipedia - Linux as an alternative platform for computing was one of the new wonders of the world, something that showed that a better world is possible. And we're just pissing it away because Linus doesn't want to talk to people who he needs to mentor.
The Dutch government can spare money for everything, but the seals?
From DVHN (in Dutch): https://www.dvhn.nl/regio/groningen/het-hogeland/kabinet-sluit-steun-voor-zieltogende-zeehondenopvang-nog-niet-uit/163110348.html
The results of the debate in Tweede Kamer are grim - no party is willing to support WEC in their struggle, claiming that "other facilities in the Netherlands can take care of the seals as well".
The truth is that said "other facilities", while they are more than willing to assist their peers, cannot just take on the WEC's patients as it is way over their capabilities.
Progressief Nederland (PRO)'s Laura Bromet especially has made an egregious and simply inhumane statement that "she doesn't know if it is wise to put money into [WEC]" and that "we can live if they (the seals) can go to other facilities".
This is a complete embarassment and shame on the entire Parliament, especially parties like PRO and PvdD, in whose interest it should be to solidarize with WEC and advocate for them.
There is no "plan B", there is no "other facilities" that can easily just inherit WEC's legacy and operate on their behalf without it taking a toll on their performance and finances.
This only makes our support even more crucial - because if the government is not willing to properly support the cause (and wishy-washy solutions are not an option), it is our duty to protect the animals that still end up getting hurt due to human intervention in their habitat.
Even if it's just 1 euro, it is always 1 euro closer to avoiding a tragedy.

@gabboman @ari @OctaviaConAmore Thanks for that tidbit of info.

Also, LOL.

somtehing might had happened but not as much as some people said
"I suggest the social action: shame. Shame these people. Their actions are shameful. AI bros hate being shamed and they try to make rules against shaming — because shame works.
None of these people doing shameful things deserve a place in polite company. They should be shamed for their shameful choices.
The AI industry is also running a PR push to redefine common word usage. The word “slop” is also super effective — so the bros really hate “slop” and try to define it to mean slop they don’t like.
But all AI output is slop. It’s social spam. That’s what it’s for. It’s slop! Say “slop” every time."

Wichtiger Schritt.

@stefano That looks amazing! What is the round item on the top left of your plate, please?
@neil it’s called “tigella” and it’s typical of the Emilia Romagna region: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crescentina_modenese
Legal Risks & Financial Realities
- High legal exposure, zero safety net
- 65.5% of reporting services operate at a net monthly loss, relying on personal out-of-pocket funds or voluntary tips
- 16.5% have faced formal legal notices (DMCA, privacy requests, law enforcement), yet nearly 80% have no insurance coverage
- 33.5% of servers are in Germany, forcing non-EU admins to navigate EU legal requirements.
Looking to 2027:
- 67% want peer access delegation to fill coverage gaps
- 60% want delegated anti-bot defense
- Platforms are adopting a community/groups focus
- Third-party/plugin tooling coming online
IFTAS remains an opt-in safety net, respecting instance autonomy. Help sustain our work:
Threat Vectors & Priority Needs
What are communities fighting vs. what do they need?
- #Spam is the #1 daily operational drain. #Disinformation detection jumped from #7 to #2 in tooling needs due to synthetic media concerns & elections
- Legal Burden: "Template legalese" (ToS/Privacy) jumped 5 spots to become the #1 most requested resource, as operators face expanding rules like GDPR, UK OSA, and age verification laws.

The Human Story - Staffing & Burnout
- Volunteer operators are stretched thin
- Coverage dropped to 1 moderator per 8,700 active accounts (down from 1:3,500 in 2025)
- 75% of instances have <16 hrs of daily moderation coverage; only 6.8% offer 24/7
- Newcomer moderators plummeted from 34% (2023) to 7% (2026)
- 41% report burnout or feeling close to it.
We need sustainable peer-support models to protect volunteer well-being

@tante It's also a little bit funny that "traditional manufacturing processes that can have their productivity effectively measured" is also a very niche category because as soon as you're making multiple things, have any quality checks that can fail products(and maybe introduce rework), or like a hundred other possible permutations your measurable metrics can start diverging from your 'actual' productivity(as measured per machine/per person/etc.).
@fire_garnet 100%. But you can at least measure actual products. How do you do that for creative work, science, art, social work etc?
@stefano I have only had breakfast maybe 3 hours ago, and lunch is still 4 hours away, and I'm now hungry with your foodie posts.
@claudiom 😂
I had breakfast at 7 and it’s 14:30 here so I’m definitely hungry!
OUT NOW: 2026 Social Web Operations & Needs Assessment Report!
We surveyed operators hosting 6M ActivityPub accounts (~32% of the network).
Key takeaways:
- Overall growth in usage, creating pressure on operators
- Communities face surging botnets & regulatory pressure
