Mid September it got merged to #FreeBSD ports tree!
We've made several changes based on reports from our friends on this instance, feedback from those who have started self-hosting, and code reviews by the Little Computer People.
Here's a non-exhaustive changelog:
PUT /api/v1/media/:id can now clear a description, and refuses media thatdescription_limit in /api/v2/instance.description as null in the API, so/api/v1/favourites skipped or repeated posts after the/api/v1/instance now reports the handle domain as uri,webfinger property with their canonical handle.#caffè, now open and follow correctly.[web] redirect_guests_to_about sends signed-out visitors from / to/about, and [web] public_blog_directory = false puts /blogs and itspublic_local_timeline = false now also hides the links to the local/public/local and when scrolling, not only/.migration.max_follows_import are now rejected instead of0 to import the whole file.Today is going to be a very important day.
I have a meeting that means a great deal to me, and its outcome will shape something very close to my heart.
It will mean a lot of work for me, but hopefully just as much satisfaction.
Things are looking very promising so far.
Fingers crossed! 🤞
Here the IMF is finally saying the things about an AI bubble that people in my Fedi TL were saying 2 years ago. I could mock them for being late to the Market Analysis party they’re supposed to be hosting — and I do, I do mock them — but also I’m happy to see that this conversation has broken through to IMF circles.
Periodic reminder that you’re allowed to curate your #Fedi access to only see things that feel nourishing to your soul. You’re allowed to get your news info and hot takes from other places than here. Sharing #doom is normalized on pretty much every other social media so it may feel like you just have to let it hit you here, but you can take steps.
Filters generally work well. My doom filter is called The Horrors and has a looooong list of words. Just added “yandex” and “death cult”.
We do have bugs but our bugs were hand-crafted by humans.

In a discussion on LinkedIn somebody opined that PF is "an evolved fork" of IPF.
My as-polite-as-possible correction to that was,
"$poster, It's not a fork.
Rather, an independent implementation that was initially tweaked so OpenBSD kept a mostly compatible configuration syntax.
ipf was removed https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=99118909527873&w=2 and the initial PF import happened later https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=99341215821296&w=2 (with lots of commits following)."
The paradox of local events:
On one hand, local organisms spend precious time keeping up on social media.
On the other hand, individuals scroll for hours although it feels like a waste of time.
What if we could meetup without being manipulated by algorithms? By changing the system, we could free up a lot of time for more interesting activities.
Mobilizon wants to help making this change happen.
To move forward, we need regular donations.

I'm pretty naive and tend to trust people until I have reason not do. It might be an unusual development setup but given the quality of what it has produced thus far, I'm happy. Very happy.
There's always risk if you go looking for it. My main concern is probably that @stefano@bsd.cafe appears to be a single point of failure and a potential bottleneck in this setup and let's not forget he has a day job too. However, the project was released just a fortnight ago and already a V2 release is imminent.
Also, the project could be forked if it ever stalled or Stefano walked away to open a pizza restaurant.
As for contributing, while it's not ideal, the source is available so theoretically one could submit a patch to Stefano and let the devs have the headache of merging into the development branch.
There was also risk on my previous hosted Mastodon instance. The admins may have got bored or the costs of hosting may have proved prohibitive, meaning the instance closed down (it's happened many times). I've been bitten before, that's one reason I got GoToSocial and Snac running yesterday. Firstly, to check the interoperability with LittleFedi and secondly as a lifeboat, just in case.
@andyc @chrism @justine Exactly. That's precisely why I pushed to release the software, and under the most permissive license possible.
Right now, I'm a SPOF. But the Little Computer People could step forward at that point. Or at least one of them.
But that's not important: the code is free, MIT-licensed, and it's there. If I were to open a physical BSD Cafe and disappear from the IT world (or disappear from the world altogether, although I have no plans to do that for at least another 100 years), the code would still be there, available to everyone.
I know at least two people who would pick it up immediately, and I already know there are a few forks out there for studying the code and adapting it to specific situations.
The moment the code became public, I relaxed.
@Alemanita@mastodon.social
@gabboman@gabboman.xyz ufff.
@andirko@meetiko.org
Oh shit
Apple event today. I'm genuinely curious if and how often they're going to say the term "superintelligence"...

@Alemanita@mastodon.social
@gabboman ¿A nivel técnico, dices?
@Alemanita@mastodon.social
@stefano the only way this could have been made better is if you were coincidentally eating a bowl of popcorn
@fullywoolly I was eating a carrot. Maybe it counts, too 😆
