Kind of a broad #ActivityPub question, for platforms implementing groups in the #Fediverse
We see maybe 2 or 3 different use-cases for how groups are leveraged in the Fediverse today:
- Traditional Discussion Groups: Lemmy-style communities, NodeBB forum categories, basically a moderated Community Actor where people send activities to the group, and the group actor relays them to all group members.
- Publication Groups: WordPress-style, the Group Actor represents a publication, and individual Actors serve as the article authors.
- Structured Account Groups: PeerTube-style, the Account Actor is the parent object that delegates everything for Child Actors representing individual channels owned by that account.
So, I guess my question is: let's say your instance has an index of known remote groups. You just want to show discussion groups, not PeerTube accounts or Flipboard collections. How do you denote the discussion groups, and filter out the rest?
Welley https://welley.social has yet another type of group. A community is a collection of channels, forums, and group chats, each with its own visibility and permissions. Individual channels are exposed to the Fediverse as ActivityPub Group actors, and members can post under their own identities or as the channel itself.
As for your question, I don’t think there’s a reliable way to distinguish these use cases just from the Group actor type. You’d need some additional metadata describing what kind of group it is, ideally something standardized across implementations.

Your follower that replied to you also used “follower only”.
So one of their follower replied. They could see that first reply even if they couldn’t see the original post (the one you wrote)
It follows whoever wrote the post, not the original post.
@jerome yes that is the expected behaviour, no questions about that.
What breaks my understanding is that follower-only posts are sent, rather than fetched. And since mastodon signs Fetch requests with an instance actor key. I don’t quite understand how a new follower should be able to see older follower-only posts!

Cette année je ne serai pas à Angoulême. Le stand que je tenais avec une amie depuis plusieurs années n'est pas renouvelé. C'était prévisible sur bien des aspects (népo cool kids + j'ai été assez critique sur le "nouvel angoulême"), mais ça me rend quand même triste. Déjà car c'est un grosse page (15 ans) qui se ferme, où j'y allais tous les ans, mais aussi parce que ça sent doucement la fin de carrière en BD, malgré mon (pas si) grand âge.
Bref, on se verra ailleurs :)
