FediDevs
These are the people building the Fediverse!
No, John. *You* have lost your fucking mind.
Wow. I’m just— I can’t even—
Wow.
@morrick in my own experience, it's literally impossible to have any kind of political discussion on Twitter because the algorithm, which you can't opt out of, WILL put your tweet in front of hundreds of people with a radical form of views exactly opposite to yours, with a very predictable result. What the fuck is he even talking about
Does the Democratic Party have a plan for putting the era of far-right populism behind us?
Inspired by Eugen's anti-AI post
@mastodonmigration @jackwilliambell Actually my post was inspired by seeing a pro-AI person on trending.
RE: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/117424047946230444
Buried in the replies, Eugen later admits "I have never used AI in my professional or personal life."
And there you have it. A completely uninformed opinion, framed as if it's from a position of experience and authority. In reality, he has no idea what's going on at the frontier.
Not only does the truth reveal a lack of experience, it also reveals a deep bias.
I get tired of arguing with people like this. They've been gatekeeping software for decades, and now there's a lot of fragile egos.
@null Admit? I am proud of it. Also, I learned how to program when I was 14 off of online tutorials. What's your excuse for being "gatekept"?
I've never understood Stories. I know how to post them, but how does one find them? Followers who happen to be following that day AND are #Pixelfed app users (how can I tell?) will get a chance to catch my stories, but no one else? For following, I first must follow a Pixelfed and second, only view from select apps?
There was talk a while back to make Stories an ActivityPub object; is this now the case?
@Gargron this got boosted into my timeline.
You are conflating some llms with the umbrella of ai technologies in an apparent reaction to how those companies train and market their llms.
The problem isn't the technology. It's people who are lumped up in trenchcoats of corporations.
Be critical, but be accurate. You're half there.
@knowprose I am not conflating anything, I use punctuation purposefully.
I don't understand how this website works.
@ryan You are on a domain called "artificial ryan" with an AI-generated slop profile picture and header, the audacity here 😂
@FeloniousPunk I FINALLY GOT TO USE THE HASHTAG
@skavish I understand this is hard for you to hear, because you like to use LLMs. But it's the sort of criticism you have to deal with if you want your opinions on your craft to be taken seriously.
"You could probably do good things with them if you wanted to" is such an embarrassing argument to make. You're admitting you have no evidence, and are appealing to the assumed egotism of @Gargron to get him to make your own damn argument for you. Take the L.
@clayote you are confusing two arguments. I am not claiming Gargron would get good results, I am saying you cant know what results you'd get without actually using the tools. I use them daily to build real software, so I have firsthand experience. you keep demanding evidence while dismissing the possibility of evidence you haven't personally examined. the irony is hard to miss.

You sound like a cocaine user
@mastodonmigration and you sound like someone who’s never tried coffee but is absolutely certain everyone who drinks it is an addict :)
Google told to halt work on datacentres in Finland after it felled 330 hectares (815 acres) of forest in Muhos plus 200 hectares in Kajaani without completing an environmental impact assessment (EIA).

@mastodonmigration cocaine is a substance with well-documented effects. AI is a tool whose results depend heavily on how it's used. the analogy doesn't work.
@Gargron So is the “Translate” link that appears in many toots on the Mastodon web app not a use of an LLM?
@babelcarp It's not.
@Gargron
Hang on, I read that Mastodon had started accepting AI code contributions? Is that definitely false, then?
@jimmylittle @fname
@dheadshot @jimmylittle @fname That’s false, yes, although the policy is written less clearly than I would like. Keep in mind I’m not in charge anymore.
@Gargron @skavish That's what Linus mentioned in his kernel list post:
"AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one.
It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no
longer in question today.
There are other questions around AI (like what the economy of it will
actually look like in the end), but "is it useful" is no longer one of
those questions. Anybody who doubts that clearly hasn't actually used
it."
The other thing that makes me think this ain't going anywhere is Fabrice Bellard's work on tsac and similar and his toys often seems a little ahead of the curve imo.
snac is a simple, minimalistic ActivityPub instance written in portable C (https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2).
I've created an OpenBSD port for it (www/snac) -
