I keep saying "we need bridges", and people are like "we don't need bridges" until they're like "wait, it would be nice if these bridged", and then I'm like "I know, we have bridges" and they're like "wow, these bridges are cool"

@Steve_Bate there are other data structures for logical clocks, such as vector clocks (representing which time different nodes think it is) and matrix clocks (vector of vectors). I don't think they're feasible or preferable for a network with 40,000+ nodes.
@Steve_Bate I hope than answered your question!
@Steve_Bate there have been a lot of advances in logical clocks since Lamport introduced them. I think there may be other structures that may be more resilient.

But they all look really complicated!

@Steve_Bate one big difference between #FEP4f18 and Lamport clocks is that Lamport emphasizes the sending and delivery of messages, while ActivityPub Network Time focuses on our unit of change, the activity.

@peertube cool! One thing I don’t understand though is how you can have more unique viewers than views. 🤔
@sknob Views are counted after 10 seconds, but a viewer is counted when it plays the video :)
api token on second prompt, today seems to be my lucky day
@Steve_Bate I don't think it's urgent, but I do think Lamport clocks are magical and cool. So, I'm going to implement it.

@Steve_Bate the question of the utility of the system is interesting.
I can think of a few direct uses, such as, having an easy way to tell if an `Update` has not been applied to an `Article`. Or to see if a `Note` has changed since a `Like` activity for it.
On a more global scale, knowing how connected an actor or server is, and how information flows through our system.
We can also get some idea of the rate of usage of the Fediverse based on how fast the clock moves.

@Steve_Bate Lamport's original paper is readable and gives some good motivations:

@Steve_Bate logical clocks let you track some kinds of causality in distributed systems.

The scalar logical clock in #FEP4f18 is similar in intent and design to Lamport clocks:

@Steve_Bate hey, Steve. So, there is a security considerations section here:
https://fediverse.codeberg.page/fep/fep/4f18/#security-considerations
Like I mentioned, the best mitigations I have are heuristic: don't advance the clock more than the expected number of activities per day, say and/or don't advance the clock at all on activities from known defector servers.
