@fediverse Writing this from Mastodon as a Test. Hello!
I’m seeing this on Boost, a Lemmy app on my phone, via Lemmy.world.
Hello from PieFed!
What…?? This is a really bad line… did you just say you’re masturbating?!?
I see your post both here on Lemmy and on Mastadon.
Hello! So how does this work? I am trying to figure out this federated things.
How did you connect?
Each group/sub on Lemmy/Piefed/etc. has an address, like subname@lemmy.website. On Mastodon, you just @ the sub’s handle, and you can follow the handle as if it were a user and have everything posted to the sub reshared to you.
Lemmy doesn’t let you follow individual user accounte, though, so you can’t follow Mastodon users. Just groups. But there are lots of things that are groups. PeerTube channels, for instace.
You just mention the community’s handle like you would another user, and that creates the thread. Hence the @fediverse. Behind the scenes, the community then does the equivalent of a “boost” to push the thread to everyone who is following the community. If I recall correctly.
…and then it gets enough upvotes to appear on “all” sorted by hot, and non-followers of the sub also see it.
That sounds relatively dangerous once the fedi becomes more popular.
The hope is that we’ll have proper community support on mastodon by then
There are safeguards: This works only for one community per post, the second and later ones are ignored.
It only works in top posts (toots), not in replies, replies also cannot post it to other lemmy communities.
So one mastodon thread can only appear in 0 or 1 lemmy community, no more, they can’t spam from there.
Dangerous, how?
The best way to post from Mastodon to Lemmy is like this:
Test post from Mastodon to Lemmy <- 1st line: automatically turned into a title
@Fediverse <- 2nd line: mentioning the Lemmy community
Writing this from Mastodon as a Test. Hello! <- Everything below: the post body
Lemmy automatically turns the first line/paragraph of a Mastodon toot into the title.
