I know that open source software becoming devalued will feel like a loss to the people who grew up holding it in high esteem, but the ability for anyone to have any software made on-demand is a much greater freedom. There will just be no way to gain socially or financially from it.

A lot of folks are saying that they’re turning away from open source because people don’t care anymore, anyone will fork or copy anything. The amount of people who care about software is exploding… they just don’t care about you or your position as gatekeeper for what their computer can do.
I am vending so many open source projects now mostly to (1) make a point and (2) make it easy to share them between my projects. But it makes no sense for anyone to use them. I have them built autonomously to fit common problems that I have. That’s their worth: to show that approach is tractable.
