the only reason my 2015 macbook air is no longer a viable apple device is because apple stopped supporting intel hardware. it still works perfectly otherwise. the numbers on most consumer hardware haven't changed in 10 years, the only significant performance advance has been apple silicon. my work machine is a 2021 air with apple silicon and there's no pressing reason to replace it https://sunny.garden/@librarysquirrel/117580418781643277

the one way I can see it getting outdated is that 500gb disk and 16gb ram becomes insufficient to run their increasingly bloated OS, but they're still selling airs with those numbers, so
for my current gig the client sent me a brand new macbook pro with 24gb ram and using it feels exactly the same as my older computers, except that the UI is ugly as hell and the ports are in more annoying places
@jcoglan @geeksam @librarysquirrel I agree with the general sentiment that older computer tech is still quite fine and we're long past the era when yearly upgrades is a must.
I disagree with the original thread. There’s plenty not to like about Apple as a corporation these days, but their hardware story ain't that. I'll defend foldable phones, touchscreen Macs, et al. up and down and all around. Not saying they're must-haves, but they're *definitely* cool AND useful.
