“I don’t know anything about US elections, but let me explain why you’re doing them wrong” is not as helpful as you seem to think it is.
@mattblaze
Also, both of these countries can run elections just fine with hand-counted paper ballots. Why can't the USA?
@iris_meredith Have you ever seen a US ballot? Are you aware that most US elections involve dozens of contests on the ballot, often more?
But whatever, you’re clearly the expert here.
@mattblaze
I am aware, and I have, and I think you'll find that your ballots are a lot less special than you're convinced they are. And I also think you'll find that once your country stops attempting to have such an overweening influence on *everyone else's* politics, we might quiet down a bit.
But no, you're so very special and it's right that you're special and have way too much influence over everyone else's politics.
Go fuck yourself.
@iris_meredith You do realize I don’t actually run US elections, and I didn’t write the US or any state constitution, right? But I do spend a lot of my professional life studying and trying to improve elections, and I’m glad we’ve made significant progress in recent years.
@iris_meredith
Can't you see that @mattblaze is merely trying to ensure that the broken US election system isn't subject to fraud, rigging, etc.? There's nothing he can do about gerrymandering, ballots for everything but dogcatcher (voting for judges? wtf?), myriads of confusing "initiatives", etc. beyond writing to his various elected representatives to look at how the far more advanced democracies around the world do things.
(Obligatory </sarcasm></snark>)
@mattblaze
OK, but proportional representation *would not kill you*. Admittedly, both New Zealand and Poland have had very weird electoral situations of late (these are both the countries where I am allowed to vote), but they still seem fucked up in a better way than the US is fucked up
