“I don’t know anything about US elections, but let me explain why you’re doing them wrong” is not as helpful as you seem to think it is.
@matthewdgreen.bsky.social Of course not. But I stand by my comment. Just making up things about elections is utterly toxic to democracy.
@matthewdgreen.bsky.social And in particular, despite what some people here seem to believe, I am not personally responsible for explaining easily available information about how US elections work to lazy jerks looking to take potshots at a system they don’t actually understand.
@matthewdgreen.bsky.social Anyway, Matt, I think I do an ok job of explaining US election minutiae in an accessible way. Perhaps you don’t think I do, but either way, I invite you to add your own voice to the effort against election disinformation.
@mattblaze @matthewdgreen.bsky.social I can't believe I pay for this subscription!
@mattblaze
OK, but proportional representation *would not kill you*. Admittedly, both New Zealand and Poland have had very weird electoral situations of late (these are both the countries where I am allowed to vote), but they still seem fucked up in a better way than the US is fucked up
@mattblaze
Also, both of these countries can run elections just fine with hand-counted paper ballots. Why can't the USA?
@iris_meredith Have you ever seen a US ballot? Are you aware that most US elections involve dozens of contests on the ballot, often more?
But whatever, you’re clearly the expert here.
@mattblaze
I am aware, and I have, and I think you'll find that your ballots are a lot less special than you're convinced they are. And I also think you'll find that once your country stops attempting to have such an overweening influence on *everyone else's* politics, we might quiet down a bit.
But no, you're so very special and it's right that you're special and have way too much influence over everyone else's politics.
Go fuck yourself.
I do think the goal of election systems should be to instill understanding and confidence even in skeptical people. We shouldn’t dismiss folks’ concerns because they’re not experts.
