the thrill of left side victory…
in a word: _fuck_.
now I still have to figure out how to get this goddamned crank off using asymmetrical force
thinking about it I may’ve just discovered why this thing was abandoned originally
the middle gear is kinda fucked (as in needs replacing - bad teeth, a crack) and if they tried to pull the crank and fucked up the removal _then_, original owner may’ve been all “oh FUCK THIS” and got a newer better bike, probably something with an aluminium frame instead of steel for lower weight.
this is one of those times I wish I had a… wuzzut called… rober press? big screw, pushes a thing into (or out of) another thing. that’d be good here right?
@moira Soak it in some kind of solvent overnight or for a few days (outdoors!). WD-40 might work, or penetrating oil. (PB Blaster would work but it's nasty stuff). THEN, try removing the crank after it's soaked. I managed to get a crank off that way (oh yeah, also used a vise clamped to a wood patio and used the frame for leverage). Wasn't easy.
@ai6yr I've been throwing the only penetrating oil I've ever seen do anything at all (WD-40 brand specifically) for a couple of days, it just says "nuh-UH" and sits there.
since the gearset is riveted so must be replaced as a set i'm kinda thinking of sawing it off
@moira 😬 Wow! Well, good luck! Sounds like my stuck seat post level of challenge (which I worked on for weeks.. that did not go well, lol)
@ai6yr I remember! That was a real adventure. I hope this does not also take weeks xD
(I am tho' worried that aluminium has welded to steel, because those are the metals involved here, so.)
@xssfox @ai6yr part of the idea with these is to re-use as many parts as possible but as i've send elsewhere i'm gonna get the dremel
the bottom bracket seems weirdly fine? like, smooth and quiet so that's a surprise
but with that middle gear being chewed up and the local bike mechanic i know best saying that _he's_ never heard of welding on new material and filing down to matching teeth before i'm at "whelp it needs replacing anyway" so let's gooooooo
(if they were bolted together rather than riveted it might be a different story BUT they're not)
…and the agony of right side defeat.
