Were you eagerly anticipating the release of the new #Motorola #phone to be preloaded with #GrapheneOS ?
You really should read the details before getting in the queue to buy one, now that they've announced the release of the flagship #Signature27 model.
So much for the implied promise of #privacy and #security from a non-Google released OS ...
@lumiworx That's not about GrapheneOS and isn't at all relevant to it. Motorola isn't using GrapheneOS as the main OS for the device. Motorola has their own OS with Google Mobile Services as they always have before.
GrapheneOS will be an officially supported option for the Signature 27. We never said it was going to be the main OS for the device. Motorola isn't getting rid of their own Google Mobile Services OS. GrapheneOS also isn't a modification of the OEM OS for the devices it uses.
I realize that perfectly well, but that's _not_ the point of the post...
If people buy it, assuming it will come free and clear of AI and Google -AND- they won't need to do anything further to benefi, they are making a bad assumption.
Will a Signature27 model be sold that is preloaded with GraheneOS and _zero_ Google entanglements?
@lumiworx @GrapheneOS the announcement only promises that it's supported, not that it ships with it already installed. Given how easy it is to install Graphene using a browser on a desktop computer or another Graphene phone, I think that's pretty decent as a first step. It's certainly a step up from the Pixel, which has never officially supported Graphene, only indirectly.
@lumiworx I would love to see a major OEM (and @GrapheneOS themselves) thoroughly embrace an anti-Google, anti-AI position, but the incentive not to do so is tremendous and the benefits are indirect. Providing direct OEM support for Graphene is still a nice outcome, given the circumstances, and from what I can see does not contradict the implied promise of privacy & security.
@lumiworx Motorola just announced official support for GrapheneOS on the Signature 27. The post says they'll be making further announcements with more details. That will include how to get a device with it.
GrapheneOS on the Signature 27 and future Motorola devices will be built and signed by the GrapheneOS Foundation. It will be the same software available for Pixels with different firmware, drivers and other hardware support code. Unlike Pixels, we don't need to do reverse engineering.
Sincerely...Thank you for the clarification.
This is exactly my whole point in posting anything about the announcement _at all_.
And to those who have friends/family/clients/acquaintances who couldn't patch a toaster if their life depended on it, they will _not_ be able to do a fresh GrapheneOS install on their own.
Please.. Stop telling people how easy it is for tech-challenged users to comprehend/do, just because you and I can, sure doesn't guarantee that anyone can.
@lumiworx Motorola has multiple engineers assigned to work on GrapheneOS support. All of our official security requirements will be met and a lot of help is being provided for porting GrapheneOS to the devices.
There will be the option for people to install it themselves without it being harder than Pixels. It hasn't been said that it will be the only option.
Motorola wants to sell more devices by providing official GrapheneOS support. There's immense interest from individuals and businesses.
@lumiworx
The Motorola Signature 27 will be able to run both Motorola's Android OS and GrapheneOS.
Motorola's OS bundles Google Mobile Services, like most other Android OSes. As part of that, it may bundle AI software, like Gemini.
@GrapheneOS doesn't bundle Google Mobile Services and Google proprietary apps like Gemini. That won't change for the Signature 27 builds.
The sentence you are highlighting also just says that the hardware is capable of it. High RAM, a good CPU, GPU and NPU also benefit other software applications than just Gemini.
@tranquil_cassowary @GrapheneOS
Did you read the linked page?
Not assuming about GraheneOS and/or it's 'capabilities'', but the hardware itself - as delivered to customers....
"
Right out of the box, the motorola signature 27 also includes powerful Google Gemini⁸ experiences designed to bring new levels of creativity, including Gemini Omni, which enables users to create and edit video through natural conversation, and Lyria which generates custom soundtracks from simple prompts.
"
@lumiworx @tranquil_cassowary Motorola has a partnership with Google for their own OS with Google Mobile Services. They have a partnership with us to provide GrapheneOS as an officially supported alternative to the main OS on the device. The text you're quoting is only relevant to the Google Mobile Services option. The hardware and firmware doesn't include AI.
The announcement says more details will be shared about the officially supported GrapheneOS option. That includes the options to get it.
@lumiworx I assume this only means that the hardware is capable of running AI models locally. You can choose to use it or not - your choice. GrapheneOS itself doesn't have any features that would utilize this accelerator - apart from maybe the speech-to-fext app they have, and local TTS. The choice is yours.
You really should read the linked page if there's any doubt about their intentions on how this phone will be released - and operates - from Day 1
Their words, not mine...

Please, please... reread the very 1st sentence of my original post. It specifically relates to a Motorola model that's "_preloaded__" with GrapheneOS.
If buyers make that assumption from their announcement, it certainly seems like that's wildly inaccurate when the page is full of them gushing about AI and what's 'stock'.
@GrapheneOS @lumiworx @tpaau17db does "officially supported alternative" mean the same keys are used for the os?
And does that mean it would pass strong play integrity?
