So look, the truth of the matter is that many Republicans didn’t believe the rape, corruption, and crime allegations. I work with these folks. Many of my coworkers are rural people who get their news from Facebook. They think it all was a libel campaign by evil liberals who were hellbent on closing churches and forcing kids to get gender reassignment. The reason diesel prices made a difference is it is an objective measure that aunt Clara on Facebook couldn’t conspiracy theory away.
I’m not defending it, I’m just here to tell you that many folks in red areas of the US still firmly believe Joe Biden sold access to the White House while simultaneously having advanced dementia, and that Democrats want to just tax “hard working” people to pay for abortions. You can’t convince them otherwise, I’ve tried. Data doesn’t matter. They have it pounded into them, and it is too mind blowing to accepy anything else.
Many rural people are working at age 70, with not enough saved for retirement. Their farm was sold decades ago. The family scattered. Church is getting empty. The local school is falling apart. What they see is a tax bill they can’t afford. They don’t see the billionaires who made it that way. They don’t see that in civilized countries, those tax dollars pay for services. To them, a life that was promised fell apart, and liberals are why.
All of this to say: I want the dems to destroy the modern Republican party. I want every boot-licking Trump supporter in government to be very uncomfortable as we round up the people who serially broke the law to cause pain to millions of people. I also want the dems to figure out that they need to support rural areas, and make a show of it. Repave those roads. Run that fiber line. Help fund community solar and wind projects. Won’t work everywhere, but it will work some places.
@mcnado I guess that makes me feel a little better? That they didn't shrug it off. But only a little, because they still gave him a walk.
@dnkboston @mcnado what's a strategy to persuade a reliable majority to extend diesel anger to health care/science research/carbon burn/government for the people anger? Sincerely asking.
@jayalane @dnkboston actual farmers, and most hunters, already know global warming is a problem. They just also are stuck on team “no science”. Have to couch it in “we’ll help pay for your farm’s transition to renewables” and “you won’t have water for your corn if we don’t solve this”. Also have to bring solutions. “Make fuel expensive” to stop burning of fuel isn’t popular. Make electric trucks functional and cheap is.
@jayalane @dnkboston @mcnado US White culture demands a lot of conformism on key issues. If you veer off, you are ostracized from the community.
This is why you see interviews with White farmers who will accurately point out how tariff are hurting their markets and the war with Iran raising diesel prices, but then say how they still support Donald Trump. They must protect themselves from their community.
This is something that the White rural community must face and deal with. Conformism is destroying their communities. The country as well
@hugoestr @dnkboston @mcnado yeah that’s why I moved from North Carolina to DC as soon as I could. They attack diversity to protect racism. This fear of nonconformity is also why cities that welcome sexual minorities do better economically than the other cities. If it’s ok to be queer or black it’s probably ok to be creative 1/2
@hugoestr @dnkboston @mcnado or a bit outside normal gender roles, a soft spoken guy or a shout-y woman, obsessed with math or Sci Fi or mosses and birds or computers. Etc. also why we will win in the end although it is taking an annoying amount of time. I feel we are letting down the ancestors who brought us so far. (And allowing the abusive ancestors power beyond what they deserve.). 2/2
@mcnado
I want to believe that this is an exaggeration of what these people actually think is happening. Seriously?
