#NationalTrust votes to ditch #Barclays and seek banking partner more in tune with its environmental policies

@jamesb they're putting out for tenders now. I don't think it's virtue signalling, it happened because of a member's vote and it was a very uncomfortable position to be in that an organisation committed to reducing their own footprint was banking with one of the worst UK banks for fossil fuel investments
And even if it was "virtue signalling", then great!
More people need to be vocal about the need to improve, and the need to do things differently - *why* they need to do things differently -, even if there is no obvious alternative readily available.
Actions speak louder than words, but words are important too.
@neil @jamesb that's a good point actually, I don't like how the phrase "virtue signalling"has basically come to mean that any positive action any organisation or person takes must only have been done for public approval and applause. It's basically used on the internet now to dosmiss any declaration of attempting to do anything morally motivated as a cynical publicity stunt
@afewbugs I'm not aware of any ethical bank. All the ones that profess to be ethical are relying on other unethical ones anyway.
Can banking actually be ethical in our modern society framework?
@jamesb there are definitely some that are better than others, and while you can't find anything 100% perfect under capitalism you can definitely minimise your investments propping up the fossil fuel industry and if one of your core purposes as an organisation is sustainability that does seem like a pretty good way not to outweigh your positive impact to me
@afewbugs Did they come up with a suggested banking partner that isn't immoral or was this just virtue signalling?
