Hmm, I've noticed that my carefully camel-cased hashtags are being converted to all lower case when I post. Is that likely to be the app I'm using or the instance I'm on? I take the time to add the capitals so that screenreaders can distinguish between the words, so it is unhelpful all around to have them removed. I see other people are able to have camel case, so there must be a way.

If you type the entire hashtag, your capitalisation is preserved.
If you only type part of the tag and select a suggestion, it uses the capitalisation of the suggestion.
The capitalisation of the suggestions is based on the first time the server saw that tag. It's difficult to have any automatic correction of suggestions, because sometimes the same tag may be capitalised to form different tags (e.g. SuperBowl or SuperbOwl).
That would be quite difficult as sometimes the same tag means different things based on how people capitalise it. There's no way for an automated system to know which meaning the user intends.
How would it know if people meant SuperBowl or SuperbOwl?
(Also there are people using many different languages on here which complicates it further.)
@FediTips well I have been typing the entire thing, not picking a suggestion, and if I don't have any other characters after it then I lose the capitalisation. If I do have any additional characters, then stays as typed.
Oh no, sorry to hear 😞 Which app are you using? Sounds like it's not working properly?
What happens when you type a space after typing the hashtag?
@keefeglise yes, I type the post, the hashtags have capital letters in, I hit post and now they don't PLUS the hashtags are showing in little bubbles.
If there is text (or a space) after the last hashtag then it doesn't get changed. But you have to remember to add that.
ETA: damnit adding a space didn't work, but this extra text should.
Aha, it appears to be happening when the final text of the post is the hashtags. If I include text after the hashtags then they stay with the capitalisation I have included.
So a workaround, but annoying to have to remember to use it.
@fak I find that the apps and website tend to try to help by auto-completing hashtags, and if you accept their suggestion, the casing vanishes. This case *also* happen even if you implicitly accept their suggestion by typing explicitly, but matching a suggestion.
It's complex behaviour, and no doubt it's the unexpected interaction of apparently reasonable features.
(You probably knew all that ... take away is that you're not alone in either seeing this or the frustration)
@ColinTheMathmo yes I'm being very careful not to accept the suggested tags, even if they match, so it's frustrating that something is overriding my actual typing. I have found a workaround (but it should respect the input it's given).
@fak @FediTips I have seen it suggested that the capitalisation defaults to that used the first time the hashtag was used on one's instance. Plausible, but not sure if true.
