@rnd Yeah, that game, on all the platforms it released on, was essentially a 2D into the screen racer, much like its predecessors, with swankier graphics. I don't think it's even possible to U-turn.
Road Rash 3D, released after it, fully committed to a polygonal engine.
@jo honestly, the evolution of the "into-the-screen" racers kinda fascinates me
like there's "cisco heat", which somehow implements sharp turns into the process while still being reliant on the same type of sprite billboarding
or "outrunners" and "cool riders", which do pretty impressive racetracks based entirely on this type of sprite overlaying, including decent-looking road barriers
okay, so it seems to be a remaster of the windows 95 version instead, which works a bit differently
in a manner, it's more of a remake of the first game, as all tracks are set in california, and not around the US (like in rr2) or around the world (like in rr3)
the graphics are all digitized, and use a sort of pseudo-3d engine that can not only billboard sprites, but also draw actual walls, which means races can actually take place in urban and suburban locations more convincingly
kinda disappointing that there are no rear-view mirrors in this version of the game, but you do get an indicator of the closest opponent, so you sort of know if there's anyone else on your tail
the licensed music tracks are pretty neat as well, and i think it's cool that EA was able to re-license them all for the remaster
by default, it uses AI-upscaled videos for cutscenes, but you can set it to skip videos altogether, use the originals in their original resolution or use the videos from the master tapes (which are higher-res, but also have things like interlacing artifacts)
works pretty well on linux, though there is a bit of a bug where the game uses separate windows for the menus and the gameplay and doesn't switch between the two properly on my system, which means using alt-tab (or alt-backtick) is sometimes necessary
