@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it yesterday

So namecheap just randomly locked my domain (which I've had with them since.. 2006) until I send them a valid government ID.

No complaints about the domain, just a random check. What the actual fuck?? #Namecheap #DNS

@Andres4NY good thing that after years I finally moved away from namecheap last year. Saved a bunch of trouble it seems.

So apparently this is a thing that they are doing, in violation of their own Terms Of Service (which they link to the in very email). The email says you have 72 hours to respond, while the TOS clause says that you have 5 business days. Lots of people getting fucked over by this: https://www.reddit.com/r/NameCheap/comments/1x8t2qj/namecheap_account_suspended_18_business_domains/ https://www.reddit.com/r/NameCheap/comments/1xajqnu/4_days_with_my_namecheap_account_locked/

If you have a domain with #namecheap, you should probably transfer it out.. like, yesterday.

A support chat window with "Heorhii Y", who says:

"Unfortunately, I am not authorized to fulfill your request, and the responsible team doesn't provide support in chats.

I have labeled your email as prioritized, so it will be reviewed as soon as possible. Please keep in mind that Risk Management-related emails may require more time than regular support issues, depending on the case and details. Your patience in this matter is highly appreciated."

So I then ask:
"Will this happen over the weekend?"
"Or is Risk Management only active M-F?" — A support chat window with "Heorhii Y", who says: "Unfortunately, I am not authorized to fulfill your request, and the responsible team doesn't provide support in chats. Same chat window. But there's now a response from "Heorhii Y.", who says:

"I’m afraid I’m not aware of their schedule, and unfortunately, I’m unable to share any details about it." — Same chat window. But there's now a response from "Heorhii Y.", who says: "I’m afraid I’m not aware of their schedule, and unfortunately, I’m unable to share any details about it."

Account locked - be careful or arbitrary account locks

I’ve been using Namecheap since 2013 to manage around 20 domains for my business and clients.

About a week ago, they locked my account and demanded ID verification. I hadn’t even logged in for over four months, so they must be running some kind of background tasks and just do arbitrary suspensions.

I submitted my ID, but because my middle name was missing from the account I created 13 years ago, their Risk Management department started questioning the discrepancy.

I’ve been emailing them for five days with no real resolution. Live chat can’t help because they don’t have access to that department, and there’s no phone number to call. I just get vague email replies every day or two from their indian support department. — Account locked - be careful or arbitrary account locks I’ve been using Namecheap since 2013 to manage around 20 domains for my business and clients. Will ALL users be required to undergo identity verification using an ID card?

By the way, about 3–4 months ago, I received an email asking me to check and update my details. I checked and updated them, and everything was fine.

Should I expect to undergo an ID verification check as well? — Will ALL users be required to undergo identity verification using an ID card? The way they're going about this isn't reasonable, I got a random e-mail that reads like a phishing attempt on a Saturday with a 72 hour compliance requirement: — reply by "waterppk", 25 days ago: The way they're going about this isn't reasonable, I got a random e-mail that reads like a phishing attempt on a Saturday with a 72 hour compliance requirement:

FWIW I replied to their e-mail within 8 minutes and they took exactly 3 days to get back to me, their reply (which didn't actually confirm it wasn't a phishing message and just told me to go to the website for live chat) appears to reset the 72 hour counter:

@Andres4NY @Em0nM4stodon

We've been gradually moving our domains to another registrar since this:

"In September 2025, CVC Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Namecheap for an undisclosed amount, valuing the company at $1.5 billion."

#Namecheap was purchased by private equity a year ago, hence their rapid downhill slide.

They _used_ to be solid. I'm in similar situation with Linode, where they were solid for ~20 years but now they've been purchased by Akamai and I'm overdue for switching away from them. At least Akamai isn't PE, but still..
