Okay so it appears KVM is the standard VM management layer on Linux, and HVF is the standard VM management layer on MacOS.

This makes the error message seem the more curious, because I got the error on Windows. Is what the error message really saying "You cannot use -cpu host on Windows"?

@mcc did you actually enable kvm? (-accel kvm)

no, it doesn't do that automatically

Sorry. Let me back up.

I am trying to run Qemu on Windows. The Linux version is giving me trouble, and I'd like to run for comparison so I can file a bug on Qemu.

When I ran the installer, I unchecked all the emulation options except x86_64 and x86_64w. It didn't give an option of "KVM", and I don't think that exists on Windows.

Since KVM is for Linux, and HVF it seems is for MacOS, and it says one or the other is required, I'm unsure how I run on Windows. Unless I replace "host". — Sorry. Let me back up. @mcc HVF is macOS Hypervisor Framework (which I had to look at recently for something)
