“Steam gets a boatload of restored Wing Commanders and Ultima ports after EA producer stumbles across cupboard of old tapes”: Wow EA did something good for once! But go grab those at GOG instead, you’ll thank me later. I already owned these games there, and apparently it’s a free update? Nice. https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/steam-gets-a-boatload-of-restored-wing-commanders-and-ultima-ports-after-ea-producer-stumbles-across-cupboard-of-old-tapes

@jbevain if you read the blog post about all the work that went into it, it's obviously not a half-assed move, there was a lot of effort in it... but it may have been *greenlit* just for those reasons you mention... although I'm not aware of any "release X every N years to keep the rights" sort of deal for these IPs.
@ludovic Eh, GOG is letting a Nazi write their emails and put swastika in them...
@Canageek Yep but I'm somewhat OK with their explanation of the incident, and I'm not aware of any other incidents. I'll take DRM-free games over Valve's locked-in platform and giving more money to Gabe Newell any day of the week, personally, until some other bullshit comes along. But if you'd rather use Steam, feel free to.
@ludovic sus, the cynical in me is wondering if it's not a copyright trick to not lose the rights to some of those, but I know nothing about that so I'm hopeful I'm wrong.
