Election nerditry: What most states call "provisional ballots" (a term codified in the Help America Vote Act), Mississippi calls "Affidavit Ballots". Same idea: the ballot is sealed in an envelop, and the voter has a short time (until Nov 10 in MS) to "cure" whatever prevented them from voting by regular ballot (such as providing ID).

@aiuto in MS, which has strict voter ID requirements, many of the provisional ballots are people who need to come back with acceptable ID.
@mattblaze Ah.. that's an important difference. I spent a lot of Tuesday tellig people to put their ID away because we don't require it in NY state.
@mattblaze Huh. Interesting. In my county (Nassau, NY state), we never were trained on that aspect. We did affidavit ballots for people who were unable to vote because their registration was not yet recorded in the system or if the system said you had received a mail in ballot, but there was no mention of a need to "correct" them. The presumption was that they would be hand counted and accepted unless they were clearly bogus.
