Motorola has announced their new high end flagship phone including upcoming official support for GrapheneOS as an OS option.
Motorola Signature 27 will be the first Motorola device supported by GrapheneOS. More devices will be supported in the future.
@GrapheneOS yeah but it's $1500
and no audio jack, byyyye
@albinanigans @benjistokman It has a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with audio output and also DisplayPort 1.4 for desktop mode. Most GrapheneOS users use wired headphones via USB rather than Bluetooth. There are good USB-C headphones available especially since Apple moved to USB-C for the iPhone a while ago. USB-C is going to continue taking over from nearly every other port including power cables for laptops and video output. It would be cool having two USB-C ports but it's too niche to expect it.
It's a huge upgrade over a Pixel 11 Pro XL with far over double GPU performance, ~60% better single threaded CPU performance and ~80% better multithreaded CPU performance. It has significantly better cameras too.
Here's the main page for the device:

@GrapheneOS : how will the camera support be in GrapheneOS? Will the picture be on-par with the Android version ?
@ploum @GrapheneOS I was wondering the same thing !
You can install any app if you install the Play Store, but often those official apps aren't on the play store to be downloaded
@q @ploum @GrapheneOS I'm use to pre-camera phone. Photos / cameras aren't a particular requirement. But usability~functionality is. If the phone has a camera, it needs to work. I was ecstatic when PostmarketOS camera worked for the first time on my Pinephone Beta after an Edge update. I sent photos on Signal to my friends to show it off. I think I tried also with Ubuntutouch and Manjaro (default), before PMOS.
My GrapheneOS Pixel is pretty good. Camera works well. I've had no issues.
@QCCEChris @ploum @GrapheneOS that's not the question, obviously the camera will work, but will it be possible to use the official app who support all of the functionality, it's another question. This phone is not cheap at all and focus on the camera to justify this price, so it's important to know
@q @QCCEChris @ploum We'll add support for using Motorola's camera app as we already do with Pixel Camera on Pixels. It's a standard GrapheneOS feature and we'll be providing all of that for the Signature 27.
@GrapheneOS
sounds great but with that $1600 price tag - it will not be an option for most users including myself... i hope the next model you support will be affordable.
Motorola Signature 27 meets all of our official security requirements. It provides a high performance hardware memory tagging (MTE) implementation from Qualcomm, a high quality dedicated secure element from NXP and we'll be able to provide 7 years of proper update from launch.
Pixels used to be officially supported by the Android Open Source Project. Android 16 dropped Pixel support and they're now much harder to support than many other devices. We have to do a lot of reverse engineering and backport QPR1/QPR3 Pixel firmware/drivers for proper updates.
Motorola is providing official support for GrapheneOS and has multiple engineers helping us port GrapheneOS to their devices and implement the required security features. We'll have what we need provided officially and can work with them to improve driver/firmware security too.
@GrapheneOS
So my next one might be a Motorola again.
@GrapheneOS Are you also getting support from Motorola in bringing the Signature 27 camera to full feature set / postprocessing on GrapheneOS build? Or alternatively, have they made any commitments to making the Motorola's camera app available for install (and stay offline / meet your security standards)?
Motorola can get Qualcomm to make improvements too. For Pixels, we regularly file issues reporting weaknesses and proposing improvements but have no special access and they often don't listen or prioritize the issues. Official support for GrapheneOS from Motorola resolves this.
@GrapheneOS Any plans with Motorola for a lower-spec model that people can actually afford? I'd love to buy a phone with Graphene out of the box as my Pixel 6 Pro just died on me, but I'm not spending $1600 on a phone any time soon
@bamboombibbitybop More Motorola devices will be supported in the future. The devices need to provide the required updates and security features which currently rules out anything other than the Signature 27. It will take significantly more time for what we need to reach the budget devices. The 'a' series Pixels are the existing budget option. A used Pixel 8a is around $200 and meets all our requirements. It has over 4.5 years out of the 7 years of updates remaining which is still a long time.
@GrapheneOS @bamboombibbitybop
200 is still a big chunk for some of us.
Will need to save several weeks/month for that.
@GrapheneOS @bamboombibbitybop
Can the signature 27 be considered as being as secure as a Pixel 10? Or are there any caveats?
@GrapheneOS @bamboombibbitybop and for what it's worth, still runs nicely on a 7a even
@GrapheneOS Thank you for the response!
@GrapheneOS @bamboombibbitybop This makes total sense.
@GrapheneOS will builds be available for the device on launch day?
@GrapheneOS Thats one good news, grapheneOS now on something other than #Google #pixel
