@guineasofbayeux @davidrevoy I suppose one could say that Schadenfreude is the English word for that, it just happens to be a loanword from German. Like "beige" from French. According to Wikipedia it's been used in English since the 1850s and in German since the 1740s, and those dates are closer together than I expected. Its English usage is actually older than that of "beige"!
@tarix29 @guineasofbayeux Oh, TIL I could use "beige" in English. Nice!
(edit: I found more about it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beige )
I can think of some synonyms, but none of them quite convey what it's trying to get at.
...except maybe lulz, but I figured it may be frowned upon due to it being associated with Channish bullshit
@albinanigans @guineasofbayeux According to Wikipedia, the closest word in English would be "gloat", but as a non native (French here) I'm not familiar with how ring this one.
@davidrevoy @albinanigans @guineasofbayeux As a native (US, New England) English speaker...schadenfreude is a pretty widely-used word for this around here. Gloating is *kinda* connected but it's not as specific and I don't think it would be a good replacement.
English loves borrowing random words and phrases from other languages and I reckon this is just one of those cases
@HuguesRoss @albinanigans @guineasofbayeux Ha... ok. I see, a bit like the case of "Zeitgeist".
@davidrevoy
Rhaa ce petit air machiavélique satisfait 😃
@davidrevoy the sheer schadenfreude in Cepper's expression is what we're all feeling
@elfi wait did something substantial happen, or it's just that the billionaire casino (aka stock market) is Having A Bad Day? @davidrevoy
@flaki @davidrevoy I think "The biggest single-day market-cap loss in the history of the Nasdaq" after a series of significant losses extending back past the US midterms (now becoming the popular thing to pin the blame to) is more than just a Bad Day but I look forward to further news :)
@elfi @davidrevoy
we can only hope that was the ‘little nudge’ this 🫧 needed
@flaki @davidrevoy I don't think Anthropic's IPO is going anywhere, that's for sure
@elfi @flaki True for Anthropic; I read yesterday this https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50366117 , and the amount of feedback of paid subscription of Claude by dev feels like a solid market with a product for this company.
But also on the last line of https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/ai/articles/anthropic-ipo-turmoil-ai-sell-113638328.html , I read that the company is also at loss since more than 9 months, and the AI stock market dive is affecting them a lot.
@davidrevoy @elfi @flaki Granted, I don't know a lot about financial stuff, but I've heard that AI companies are running at a loss in order to generate false demand and get corporations reliant on their product, at which point they'll spike their token cost. A lot of companies have been "tokenmaxxing" and getting surprised by the cost.
I did find it an odd thing for Anthropic to admit in their own IPO that they didn't see themselves profitable in the future, though!
Still on the same website; I read this morning this: https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/analysts-investors-react-ai-market-011114659.html
"The selloff shows that AI stock prices had been built on rosy illusions about the future, and now that illusion is gone,"
"It's actually a bit of a disaster"
"a record plunge"
Not a good day for investors and any big tech company.
@davidrevoy I found a heart in the bubbles!
@davidrevoy surprised to find 'schadenfreude' in the Alt-Text... is there really no English word for that? (... and what does that tell about Germans?) I must confess: I sometimes do have a lot of that... Anyways: I fully agree! *Schadenfreude*
