Godzilla Minus Zero in IMAX was almost too much for me. Immersion into something that intense is almost painful.
I should have known after Minus One that Takashi Yamazaki was going to put me through an extremely strong emotional experience.
The movie looked fucking amazing, the monsters especially.
I loved it, even though during several scenes where I was really emotionally bound up in the action I was thinking to myself "I hate this movie. I hate this movie. I hate this movie."
It's antigravity, silly! Made of 100% realistic antigravitons! Or an isotope of disbelievium, maybe.
Seriously, Godzilla fans, this one is made for you.
I'm not necessarily a "Godzilla fan" myself, but so much of this movie just made me want to clap my hands with excitement at just how much it feels like the many Godzilla films Spouse has had me watch.
It has better, more modern effects with a stronger plot & better defined characters than the older Godzilla movies, but not in a way that feels like an attempt to "fix" anything.
To me, it feels like a fulfillment of what older Godzilla movies simply *couldn't* be due to the fact that this technology wasn't available.
It's not that "man in a suit" effects are bad actually, but obviously it is now possible to realize the creatures in a really wonderful way.
I wouldn't even call the monster designs in Godzilla Minus Zero "realistic". I don't think "realistic" is what the intent was.
It doesn't seem like they took the common modern approach of "if this monster was a 'real' creature, what would he look like?"
Nah. These are classic designs lovingly brought to life. I admire it so much.
