this is the first bike i’m taking apart down to the frame and this head feels _bad_
This does _not_ want to come off.
unfortunately it kinda needs to because this gearset has _problems_
i have cleaned and derusted and restored some pretty bad cables in this learning adventure
these will not be joining that list
(they have intra-cable thread breaks)
"I paid until the end of the year. I'm not budging."
pfft. The bearings are still in the capture ring. What are you complaining about?
@Amgine i want gritty creeping people out in philadelphia not haunting this bike’s steering xD
"Yeah, you and what army?"
<sets out 3-arm puller, 3' socket handle, and "flame wrench'>
"Just me."
@Amgine yeah last time i got out the pipes i broke the tool rather than freeing the crank :/
No, really, I have a snap-on 3' breaker-bar. I have stood on the end of this thing; it flexes a bit when I bounce. Call it a ½ ton of force.
Okay, never with the 3-arm puller, which would break.
But I think the bike frame would go first.
@Amgine The crank puller sure gave first and I was just using a 2’ pipe and my arms :/
Ah, mine is rather robust, but I think it is in the kid's toolbox at the moment. The box says it should only be used with a torque wrench. Which I do not recall noticing previously.
Naturally the manual is also missing. <sigh> Kids.
Anyway, I think nut is 1½", and the arms are black iron castings. Wish I had it handy to photograph.
@moira I enjoyed doing that a few times! Just labor intensive. Also repainted, which takes too long for my (undiagnosed) ADHD, lol.
captive bearings o noes
