Apparently Musk is pro-Empire/Sith/Dark Side, based on his meme posting. Why do all these ultrarich folks decide they'd LIKE to be the villains?
@ai6yr I don't know, but your question is making me think of Meursault's inner dialog as he faces execution in The Stranger by Camus.
@ai6yr I think because nobody likes them. Like really actually likes them. So I guess just lean into being a baddie
@ai6yr I think lot of it is human behavior, we want what we don't/can't/are told should not have. The lure of the forbidden fruit. If your really wealthy lot of the things avg people desire that way are not even something that takes effort to have.
@ai6yr Like, whatever happened to the idea of public works? They could be building some dope libraries, parks, and performing arts centers to rival anything on earth.
@ai6yr I think it's boredom more than anything else.
I grew up and still live in the heart of Silicon Valley. I've had the opportunity to meet and speak at length with Steve Jobs, William Hewlett, Alan Kay (if you know, you know), Steve Wozniak, and others.
There's a distinction between engineers like Kay and Wozniak and visionaries like Jobs and Musk. Both groups are intensely driven, but their motivations are fundamentally different.
Jobs had a singular focus, whether at Apple, NeXT, or Pixar. He was fascinating to talk to, and Jobs never seemed bored.
Musk made calculated bets and now is richest man But wealth has brought a degree of boredom,
When virtually anything is available to you, what's left to pursue? Musk seems to cycle through personas—gamer, provocateur, villain or whatever captures his attention at the moment.
To me, that's the fundamental difference: Jobs was driven by what he wanted to create. Musk increasingly seems driven by whatever will keep him entertained.
@cvvhrn @ai6yr Jobs and Wozniak had a lot more in common than either of them have in common with Musk. Both Wozniak and Jobs were in it to build something(not necessarily the same thing), Musk was in it to get himself somewhere.
There’s always something for a Steve to make, there’s really nowhere substantive left for an Elon to go. Boring.
@su_liam @ai6yr Agreed. I split them off because both were visionaries for the lack of a better word (really applies to Jobs rather than Musk) and seemed more apples to apples, than Woz or Kay.
Hewlett, Jobs, Woz, Kay are all ones I both enjoyed and would love to chat again with if ti were possible, Musk not so much
Jobs in particular because I got to speak to him in multiple era's of his. As the brash young startup of apple. I had purchased 50 shares of the stock in 1982 using paper route money and went to shareholder meeting and the PR people thought that would be fun to have us meet up
Then spent 8 hours over night talking to him in a capacity I cannot speak beyond.
Then post his second act at Apple.
Different person but the fire, the drive was still there
When EF Hutton talks, people listen lol
@ai6yr It’s in the nature of evil.
@ai6yr WDYM “like”? He *is* a supervillain.
@ai6yr they’re part of the exploitative power structure, and once they get high enough up, the only characters they CAN empathize with are the exploitative ones at the top of the power structure because they are they only ones they can identify with. To become a billionaire+ you have to do some awful stuff, so you become ok with awful stuff.
@ai6yr he’s an idiot. He also wants to be Beeblebrox from hitchhikers guide to galaxy. No one wants to be Beeblebrox because he’s a buffoon!
