One of the things we need to figure out how to communicate to our new legislature is the degree to which existing law is insufficient and corrupt. We need big changes. And I say this now because the scale of the changes needed _is_ going to take years. Assuming the dems take the presidency in 2028, we actually need to be getting ready now, laying the intellectual groundwork for legislators to draft bills to pass in 2029.
ICE killed Renée Good. But ICE did not kill Alex Pretti; CBP killed Alex Pretti. ICE did not raid Ilhan Omar's home, HSI did that. And ICE did not raid that Chicago apartment building and put children in zip-ties, that was ICE and CBP and ATF and the FBI. Are we going to abolish the FBI?
(Kolektiva Posters, that's rhetorical, don't answer that)
@glyph There is a "pour encourager les autres" aspect here, though. One way to encourage better behavior among all law-enforcement agencies is to take the most notoriously badly behaving one out back and shoot it
@jalefkowit I did begin by saying that it's necessary but not sufficient. ICE should be shuttered and everyone who worked for them should be barred from public service forever. There is no sanction severe enough for that agency specifically.
As just one example, we have the rallying cry of "Abolish ICE!". And indeed ICE should be abolished, there's no question of that. But ICE is not really the *problem* here. ICE is enforcing our immigration laws as written. They are allowed to do 95% of the heinous shit they have done. You cannot just fire one SS officer and then re-hire a different guy with a different hat to run the camps. You need to get rid of the camps, and the law that says the camps can exist at all.
