I see Gruber thinks Mastodon is dying. Well, he's welcome to fuck off back to Twitter.
Indeed, my original notion applies to literally anyone who thinks that Mastodon is dying.
Just fuck off. Please.
Fuck off to Twitter, or Bluesky, or Threads (if Threads is still even a thing).
Fuck off and leave us to enjoy ourselves over here.
Fuck off, and take your refusal to add alt-text to photos with you.
We're perfectly happy chatting amongst ourselves. You're just pissy that people don't kiss your arse as much as they used to over there.
Oh, and you're on .social, which a huge number of servers block because that where so much of the spam comes from, so if you don't get as much interaction as you used to on Twitter, that'll be why.
Just fuck off.
@DJDarren Eternal September. Gentrification. Enterprisification.
When you chase mainstream validation, the thing that made you interesting to begin with goes out the back door into the alley to start over while you roll out the red carpet in the front for people who don't actually want what made you interesting to begin with.
And thus Mastodon would stop being an uncoördinated organic collection of coffee shops and turn itself into Starbucks and/or Tim Horton's.
Stay weird, Mastodon.
I think I'm mostly just tired of the US-centric, Tech-Bro mindset that endless growth is literally the only metric by which anything should be measured, that Mastodon not having as many active users as Twitter is a sure sign that it's dead or dying.
They give very little consideration to the quality of a thing, only to whether it's profitable, or growing, or winning. Speaking for myself, the connection with the people I've met on here is worth far, far more to me than whether it has more active users than Twitter.
To be fair, I have the privilege of my income not being tied to the popularity of a social network. But there's nothing stopping those people from finding other forms of income. Mastodon doesn't owe them a living.
I'm very, very much done with the notion of the biggest thing being the best thing. I couldn't give a tuppeny fuck if Mastodon 'wins', I'm just happy to be here, chatting amongst good people who care.
at a personal level, sure.
but social media influences society. we should want fedi to win because most people using platforms where a few billionaires decide what the public is regularly inundated with is corrupting. mass media has this problem too.
but decentralized social media can free us. widely used and integrated, the public could decide what we pay attention to democratically. revolutionary.
@wjmaggos Oh sure, yeah, you're not wrong.
But until the billionaires can control what gets said on the Fediverse, they're not going to pay any attention to it, so they're not going to push anyone to it, ergo it can't "win".
So I'll just carry on enjoying it for what it is, and not what we might ideologically want it to be.
you don't give people enough credit. it only exists because people weren't happy with what the mainstream provided, and then convinced others to join. and fedi isn't even the same as it was before Elon bought Twitter. our acceptance of a small fedi also means accepting the rising negative influence of corporate social platforms on society and most of our friends and family. I want more but still enjoy it here and don't use anything else.
In fact, I saw this in my Immich library this morning while looking for something else. I saved it because I wanted to occasionally read it and remind myself that success doesn't need to be forever. Success can be simply enjoying yourself in the moment before moving on to the next thing.
By that metric, Mastodon is a success to me.
Yes, I'm grumpy this afternoon, but man, that guy fucks me off.
He's so busy gobbling Apple's trillion dollar cock that he's pretty much soured everyone from Europe towards him with his endless whining about how the EU is curtailing Apple by, y'know, forcing them to accept some level of accountability.
