Visual Studio Code’s “Code Helper” is currently spawning so many copies of `rg` that I can’t even invoke `ps aux | grep rg` to count how many copies it has spawned.
This is fine.

@freakboy3742 @phildini sigh. okay. no, I still need to give the annoying answer:
brew tap d12frosted/emacs-plus
brew install emacs-plus
@freakboy3742 @phildini it's annoying because it's a custom homebrew recipe which has to be built from source sometimes and generally is a bit weird because it's not Just A Normal App. You probably will need to make an Alias in /Applications or do something to make your preferred launcher find it properly. Whereas emacsformacosx is a cask, actually distributed as a binary, and generally works normal. (Except, as I just explained, it doesn't work right now.)
@glyph @freakboy3742 @phildini you actually _copy_ it into `/Applications`, but … that’s printed out when you install it, and it’s rock solid as long as you follow those instructions. You get terminal emacsclient, plus emacs-that-plays-nice.
@offby1 @freakboy3742 @phildini okay that's weird, I guess I did whatever it printed out. which is weird because it has been properly updating (the copy and the original are synced) and I definitely haven't been re-copying it on every update. But whatever it's doing it's been working great since Golden Gate dropped 2 months ago, and it worked great for me for like 6 years in the middle there
@glyph @offby1 @freakboy3742 have you considered: use one of your streams for "here's how I install and use emacs"?
@phildini @offby1 @freakboy3742 I mean that's what most of them are about, but unfortunately there's not a ton of like… "set up" actions I take. I wrote a program, that is my Emacs, it's about 20,000 lines of custom elisp, plus a bunch of 3rd party packages of course. I need to put it somewhere public but as you may imagine there's a lot of cleanup I'd need to do first
@glyph @offby1 @freakboy3742 "expert thinks their setup is obvious and intuitive from observing it in action, news at 11"
😉
@freakboy3742 how the!?! what were you trying to do before this?
@phildini I haven’t done anything consciously. I *do* have a lot of VSCode windows open… but that’s not a recent change - I have a lot of projects on the go at once. I don’t even know how to go about diagnosing this, other than “take off, nuke it all from orbit, and hope it doesn’t happen again” (except that it seems to have happened twice in the last week…)
My guess is that it’s trying to index the contents of `build` folders… but that’s a SWAG.
@freakboy3742 @phildini man I did not expect 2026 to be the year I fully embraced feeling good about using Emacs forever but Events keep Transpiring
@glyph @freakboy3742 I desperately wish I could make myself get used to terminal-based IDEs, but I just don't seem to have it
