@anon_opin we had this in South Yorkshire until about 1985. The busses were ridiculously cheap, reasonably frequent, and busy.

Then Thatcher made it illegal (but apparently it's still legal in London). The busses got more expensive so more people bought cars instead. As bus use went down, the service became shittier, so more people bought cars.

It was an ecological disaster. We absolutely should go back to subsidised public transport that is dirt cheap and good quality.
