Yeah that's right kid. Back in the day I had a hard drive that was on /dev/hda1
Not even /dev/sda1 I said hda that's right
I remember those days
Grub???? I used LILO
Installed Slackware from a box of floppies on a spare 486
@cwebber
My earliest Linux experience was probably SLS. I distinctly remember installing it on my work computer in frustration because Windows 3.1 (with a network stack from FTP Software (not to be confused with the ftp program or protocol)) kept crashing whenever the company network was too busy (like whenever a critical release deadline was approaching). 1/2
@cwebber oof got me right in the LI
@cwebber i will say, hda2 is far better then nvme0n1p2
@cwebber
Ouch, do I remember LI... argh...
@cwebber I had a couple of boxes that I couldn't lilo, so I was running loadlin
@cwebber im exactly this old
@cwebber I remember LILO. I remember installing Slackware not on a spare 486 but on my one and only 486, in a dual-boot config with MS-DOS 6.2 on the other partition.
@cwebber I determined how successful my install attempt was by counting the number of letters LILO printed to the screen.
A shoebox of floppies. It had to be a shoebox. That was the only way you were allowed to keep them
@cwebber We always had Flip'N'File™ boxes...
Livin' the high life, I guess.
I'm telling you, Windowmaker was *the shit*. It still is. It still is
@cwebber ran it for years, rock solid, I abandoned it for the conveniences of KDE but I do miss it
Do you remember that StumpWM video with the person with the incredibly deep voice named "male" pronounced mah-lay
Because I remember https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKt_rVO960Q
@cwebber That's pretty cool, i see a lot of similarities with how i have been using i3wm then Sway for the last decade and a half, though of course there are important differences, but i do use named groups/workspaces and use rofi to switch to one or move a window to one. Though it doesn't really do the "empty space" thing as far as i know (windows/groups will take all the available space), but i never really wanted that. You might have tried it and maybe didn't like it, but if you didn't, i would encourage you, it's very good.
@cwebber I saw the background (which could be straight out of Hackers honestly) before the preview image loaded, friend
@cwebber this reminds me of vimperator / vimium
it's not a full window manager but you can browse using vim key bindings / no mouse
Vimium - The Hacker's Browser
YouTube
wow what the fuck every version of this video I find is unplayable
@cwebber I'd prefer Widowmaker instead
@cwebber Hah I forgot about LILO! I still remember my first long term Linux distro was running Linux 2.4, and I was very excited to build my own Linux 2.6 kernel from source when it was released.
