So this morning to me feels a lot like the night of election day 2008, when simultaneously the country elected Barack Obama and California, super-hippie California, changed its constitution to ban gay marriage.

This is a really dangerous moment. The newly swollen Democratic caucus contains some true transphobes; some former trans-supportive Dems ran away from their records. The Labour flip is still a risk. Ds could look at the 2 facts above and conclude (wrongly) they won *because* they turned anti-trans.
But run the numbers. Anti-trans Dems won last night. Pro-trans Dems *also won*. In other words, *no one cares*. Folks vote anti-trans on a line by itself, but *that's it*.
What this tells us is the public is *movable*. Majority transphobic, but their transphobia is not a deep, important conviction.

I think it's important to think about this in a careful way. These results are confusing, and we should try not to get confused.
Two facts: The anti-trans attack on Democrats failed utterly; and America *is* getting more transphobic, and transphobia-by-itself largely succeeded at the ballot box.
