“LED bulbs last forever” false. LED bulbs last like 1-3 years tops. idealized bulbs georg, who exists in an environment without heat or weather and has been on for 15 years and counting, is a thought experiment and should not have been counted
@zzt
I know a few folks who invested in an led retrofit of parts of their homes. They bought fixtures without the ability to replace the LEDs, so when they died a few years later (like, literally 2-3 years) they had to do a whole new reno, because they no longer sold the same model.
LEDs *can* last a long time, but it doesn't mean they *will*. What we are sold is often a minimum viable product, far from a best-case scenario.
At the end of the development of audio and video tape technology at the turn of the century, we had tapes that were nearly indistinguishable from CD/DVD. Is that the standard for modern tape media today? Nope! We get the minimum viable product - just good enough to kinda be ok. Or as I would have said back in the day: "shitty".
@sb @zzt "LEDs can last a long time, but it doesn't mean they will."
It's almost entirely about heat management, in my experience. I have Philips bulbs that run 8 hours a day minimum, going on 15 years life, but they look like this (see pic). They weigh a ton - beefy, substantial things compared to the race to the bottom builds of typical LED bulbs sold today.
if the bulb breaks when it’s in by far the most common type of enclosure for bulbs, that seems uhh real bad
did dyson come up with this shit?
also the lights that include custom bespoke LED assemblages that can’t be replaced are usually far worse unless the same company makes LED bulbs and doesn’t take the opportunity to make the bespoke one much worse
“uhm what alternative do you recommend” pay the prison doctor 20 packs of menthol kools to shine your eyes
@zzt always been disconcerted by CFL then LED failure rates. they really don't like music IME.
@davidgerard right! for incandescent bulbs if someone insisted the bulb would last forever you’d tell them to get the fuck out. you would kick them out of your house
but nah the one thing everyone seems to know about LED bulbs is they last forever, and occasionally they tell me this within view of an LED bulb that’s flickering
don’t reply about how it’s because the bulb is in an enclosure or it’s cheap or you’ve never had an LED bulb break even once
i uh don’t build houses or choose the bulbs for every space I inhabit
