Hmm, apparently the millions spent on media blitzing against the billionaire's tax managed to tilt votes against it. FUD works? Or do all those folks think they, someday, will be billionaires? 🤔
@scentedmeat @noondlyt Yeah, they are in the pockets of the very rich people, that's what happens when you are in the hanging out in the same social clubs/bars/etc. as your rich donors, and your campaigns ALSO are dependent on those big donations and PACs.
@ai6yr
Uh, both?
I think there's also a response to the slippery slope argument, that if you let "them" put a wealth tax on billionaires "they'll" come after you next. Cf Prop 42 results.
I don't know but I am sorely disappointed. Fuck billionaires. The message was clear and they once again bought their way out of it. It SUCKS.
@ai6yr I don't live in CA, so my comments are from the sidelines.
But if anyone's thinking of trying again I would recommend not having it be a one-time tax.
To me, that was a very big negative. I makes no sense to have a one-time tax to fund an ongoing need for revenue.
The ads they ran were brilliantly effective. You too could suddenly be a billionaire, and then omg, they’d tax YOU! (Well, yeah.) No guarantees that it’ll fund whatever needs funding! (Dude, I don’t care if you burn the cash, or throw it out a fucking hot air balloon, or bury it under the ocean floor, just take it from those rich fucks!)
There needed to be a “Newsom has buyers remorse as he realizes prop 40 could hurt his donors for a possible 2028 run” ad in response, but hey 🤷♀️
@ai6yr California has been radically anti-tax pretty much my whole life, so I don't read too much into this result
@ai6yr yeah, I really wanted it to pass but did not think it would due to the blitz. Even sane people I knew were questioning it at the end, not the 'but I might be a billionaire some day' thinking. Most of the deliberation came from aligning various 'vulnerable groups' that were against it then attacking the person who supposedly got it on the ballet, and framing it as political manipulation. That was a clever strategy. Still 44% vs 55% still feels like a radical shift for california and the US
@ai6yr @noondlyt Doesn’t help that the entire dem establishment in CA was against either. 🤬
