@nina_kali_nina if you want to see something pretty cursed try SuSE OES. It's SuSE Linux with a bunch of NetWare services ported to it, including its weird ass filesystems.
Like, did you know this is what they took from us? These titlebars you can almost feel with your fingers... This smell of a cup of Java in the mornings. Dockable windows and bars. Buttons that are obviously buttons (and not "wow might be a href over img element"), that are obviously enabled (or obviously not)
Novell Netware file browser is very minimalist. SYS: it says.
I installed the OS on a fresh disk, so the folders are only system components. I have no idea what is it even in there. So exciting.
I knew there were X11 servers for non-Unix systems, but I did not know someone besides DESQ shipped one as their main desktop. Novell, oh, everything is so Novel (to me)
@nina_kali_nina DEC did this for VAXstations and Alphas running VMS
@nina_kali_nina There’s even an unreleased (and unleaked?) version of PowerPC NetWare with a rather amusing story: https://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2023/12/when-power-macintosh-ran-netware.html
So, Novell Netware 5 is an absolutely cursed operating system. As far as I can tell, it boots Caldera DOS as a stage-0, then goes into NWSERVER kernel that uses its own everything, and from there boots a JAVA shell, and from there there's an init also presumably in Java, that starts binaries for X-for-NW, IceWM-for-NW and, if I were to believe Novell's docs, a Java-based desktop. It definitely looks and feels like Java.
Java OS that I did not know existed
