Just found out that #Debian tzdata package (https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/tzdata) is not currently supporting the Canada/Pacific (PCT) timezone yet (https://time.now/iana-time-zone/canada-pacific/).
Instead it’s reporting us as on Mountain Standard.
uncool Debian… this is inaccurate and the information has been available for months.
@jfmezei there is a new “PCT” Canada/Pacific that is supposed to be UTC-7… it is registered with the IANA but clearly not all the software packages have updated. Apple actually just has a little tiny message in the Date and Time preferences today that informs me “new timezones are available and will be installed at the next restart”.
After restart it is still showing me on Pacific Daylight Time.
Clearly this was not as high priority to ‘get right’ as Y2K lol
@chris BTW tanks for heads up. Even on my ancient 10.13 High Sierra, going to time and date in settings did trigger "update time zone data avaialble will be installed at next restart".
It shows you as being in the PxT time zone as with rest of the zone, but when you move across the border, it goes from Pacific Standard Time to Pacific Daylight Time. " I would have expected Apple to use the IANA tz data which should show you in MST sicne you are not in "Daylight Time".
@chris Hopefully politicians revert their stupid move by next spring and all this mess is done with for another 100 years.
I am seeing EST here in Manitoba on OpenBSD 8.0. I am not too upset, at least they got the right offset from UT.
Anyone know why each province needs a new timezone name now? Saskatchewan has always been CST but now if you drive into Alberta nothing changes, but you call the timezone ABT. No idea what you are supposed to call it if you go into western Ontario. I suspect that once most of the provinces/territories drop seasonal time changes that we will have to go back and make it all make sense.
Wikipedia has an awesome map:

@upofadown perhaps because each Province has the capability to change its own time zone. If it was only a National time zone then there would be no need for regionality.
@chris I was reading the sources for tzdata and there's a big series of comments for each declared timezone that explains what's what. PCT hasn't been formally adopted yet, it's waiting on some other org (unicode? iana? I'll look it up) to agree with the politicians.
@kboyd ya it is in IANA and there does seem to be an update (2026e?) to make the change but it is not in the general stable apt update stream yet

@chris UTC-7 is mountain time. Pacific tine zone is utc-8. Your government put you in utc-7.
