someone ensloppifying most GNOME apps in ruby and adding their "copyright" on top of it. github.com / ruby-gtk-project
"send money so I can do more of this. FLOSS maintenance is now my full-time job."
the bloody gall man, what is wrong with these people.
@hbons is that "ai-driven clean room reimplementations" https://occupysaas.com/
@hbons this is blowing my mind:
It's like... cosplaying as a programmer, who can't be bothered to understand the code, but can have opinions about how the code should be understood and can then try to automate that cosplayed understanding.
@federicomena @hbons Even that document sounds LLM-generated to me. Or copypasta.
"It is not authority. It is a confession that has been formatted to look like a design document."
Who spends the time to write 200 lines like that when they are into vibe-coding. I've recently read the "design documents" or 2 repos that I was interested in and they all had this kind of "It's not X. It's Y and <snarky phrase>" prose to it.
@compfu @federicomena oh yea 100%. it's quite disconcerting to read.
@hbons somehow I'm not surprised they are going with Ruby. It's pretty on brand with the kind of people you find behind big projects in Ruby, like Ruby on Rails 🙄
@hbons opportunistic shameless twats. Would not be surprised if there were a correlation between these people and the ones that just steal your bike parked in front of your door.
@hbons I'm afraid - LLMs just make this shit easy now. But they are also likely going to be short lived.
Give them no money, and they'll go away eventually.
we are going to see entire desktops created eventually. I'm afraid this is just the beginning. But a project with a solid community around it is always going to win in the end.
@sri you're right about this. just need to remind myself of that.
@hbons “FLOSS is my passion”, by which they mean taking the work of upstream maintainers and contributors, and doing this:
@hbons I’ve seen similarly a lot of slopified wikis and the like that scoop up (game).wiki., (app)wiki.com., et al., and then said "wiki" is just a store page or README description with ads and affiliate links.
But same story "aye this is hard work maintaining, gimme the currency", aye I bet it was a toughie tellin the computer to do that and then never touchin its again
@hbons Worst part is that someone asked them "What was the purpose of this" and he replied "To show the power and possibilities of using Ruby to make GTK apps, so I need working examples"
So their demonstration is "Look how I can ripoff stuff with an LLM"... pretty sure most idiots already do that.
sorry for the negativity, but it's not like I go looking for this stuff. it's slapped in my face every single day.
I desperately want to be left behind but it's not happening.
@hbons I totally get it. It's impossible to get away from, it seems, and that doesn't do anybody's mental health any favors.
@hbons As a follow-up thought - we are seeing a lot of pitches that are obviously LLM written, and some that make one wonder if they are LLM written.
Same thing with news tips, and other pitches.
It's discouraging AF. In my entire 20+ year career as a writer and editor (off and on) I have stumbled on a few instances of outright plagiarism.
For me, that's a pretty faith-shattering thing. I'm not talking about "oh, this author copied a sentence or didn't attribute a quote", I'm talking about obvious wholesale copypasta of somebody else's work.
But those were one-offs, far outweighed by legitimate submissions. Some of them terrible! But honestly written by the authors.
Now... I really have to question everything that crosses my virtual desk, and it SUCKS. I hate not knowing if a person is trying to pull one over on us by submitting LLM-generated gunk, or -- in fact -- if I'm even interacting with a human at all.
So, I really do get it, and I sympathize a lot. It's a slap in the face to people who still believe in human creation.
@jzb yea... the breakdown of trust is the worst bit.
@hbons Frankly what worries me more is slop within GNOME. I already lost all trust on some contributors.
