Honestly, school systems should stop using Google Chromebooks in the classroom. They are computers that are #enshittified out of the box.
Google Will Turn Off Search for Schools That Reject A.I.
Google is making it easier to restrict its A.I. tools for students. But schools that block A.I. entirely will lose student access to Google’s search engine.
@robho On the one hand the Doug Ford government's corrupt authoritarian austerity is a bad thing, perhaps a "post Ford" government might be more inclined to be innovative using free/libre software.
The Indian state of Kerala, for a long time governed by the left achieved a 1:1 computer/student ratio over a decade ago by migrating to free/libre software.
@robho At least a partial motivation for my own implementations of free/libre software in election campaigns over the last four years is that a number of elected officials at least partly, owe their election success to free/libre software. :) And I make them aware of it.
@leftylabourtech It's not just the Chromebooks, most of the classwork takes places in Google Classroom, essentially just a Google drive. Email is gmail. Videos are mostly YouTube. If you bring it up, most parents and teachers think you're a zealot, because the spend their lives on YouTube, gmail, instagram and Facebook.
@leftylabourtech Just looked it up. TDSB has apparently already paused Chromebook purchases. I guess due to Calandra's budget cuts: https://www.tdsb.on.ca/School-Community-IT-Support/11-Student-Device-Program
