I love when I'm learning about some historical battle, and they talk about one of the Generals as a Genius Military Strategist, and then you find out that the plan is always "Hear me out, what if we surprise them, and then get all around them."
@RickiTarr or half the army chickened out at first, then showed up late and gets all the credit for turning the tide
@RickiTarr to be fair to those guys, often this kind of move just goes against the gentlemanly agreement of honorable battle and nobody wants to be that guy who disgraced the entire military by not playing fair and losing
@16af93 Have we tried being unscrupulous assholes?
Ricki, have you considered a career as a Genius Military Strategist?
@ParadeGrotesque For a person that's spent way too long studying wars and revolutions, I'm generally a pacifist lol...generally
@RickiTarr
Or you find out that it was more of a "whoopsie!" from the other side.
@arniepix Turns out soldiers with plague aren't particularly hearty
@RickiTarr it's like when people praise certain philosophers as being so brilliant that we poor mortals couldn't possibly understand them, and then I find out that they had neurosyphilis and were basically insane.
@CuriousMagpie Yeah, he slept in a barrel and ran around naked, but he made some good points.

@RickiTarr Guys, guys ! What if we point over that way .... AND THEN GO THIS WAY!!!!! yeah ! Yeah !! *nods frantically with a manic smile*
Every military plan ever
@RickiTarr never underestimate the power of a few new germs! "oh heck, i guess those savages didn't need that land anyways"
@sidewayshighways Checklist: Trebuchet, Plague Bodies
@RickiTarr that'll take care of like 95% of all random encounters/sieges
OMG
Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg!!!
At the same time JEB Stuart was trying to attack the Union rear with 4000 cavalry.
He was stopped by 400 cavalry from Michigan lead by General Custer.
The site is Battlefield East at Gettysburg, the least visited place at Gettysburg.
Custer prevented a crushing Union defeat.
July 3 1863, the day 400 guys saved America.
battles are tactics.
campaigns are strategy.
ensuring the supplies and the troops get to the right place at the right time.
@RoseRaven The real genius is the Resource Manager
@RickiTarr @RoseRaven People often focus on the flashy bits in storytelling.
I've spent weeks trying to get half a dozen people in the same room for an hour, so I can't imagine what it takes to get tens of thousands of people to one place, prepared to do anything.
@foolishowl @RoseRaven As a frequent planner of trips and vacations, I limit it to 6 if we are traveling, every person adds 15 minutes to the time it takes to do anything. I can't imagine trying to corral a bunch of boys who have never been away from their mother.
and fed.
and a place to sleep.
and geared.
being the army mom chasing everyone down saying "yes you -do- need your jacket"
this is why you should appreciate all the organizers in your life who coordinate things like marches and rallys.
Post Napoleon Clarity
@RickiTarr "Did you know we can just sneak into their camp at night and kill them in their sleep?" is another fun tactic that brilliant strategists throughout history liked to employ.
@RickiTarr he also did "what if I had more, bigger guns than the other guys" and "what if we put preserved food in tins so we could carry it reaaaaaaally far away on campaign and keep the fellas fed?"
@AlexanderVI What if we gave them meth?!
@RickiTarr sometimes it’s what if we use a technological advantage?
@Kierkegaanks What if we poison them and violate a treaty or two
@Kierkegaanks @RickiTarr or the classic of make them run up the hill.
@RickiTarr It's never manipulate the RNG and enemy pathfinding algorithms to overcome the scripted events with no losses and then deliberately avoid killing the c&c units, to hit the unit limit on things with no offensive capabilities, so the attack waves become smaller and smaller until they stop. No, with them it's always something like "shoot first" or "hide the cannon under a canvas tarpaulin with leaves seen on".
