The "Freedom of movement in digital Europe" initiative seems conceived and shaped around the language and designs of #atproto projects (pds etc), but if succesful in prying adtech platforms open, it becomes a mere technical problem to import data into the #activitypub #fediverse

@smallcircles @z428 I am not too deep into the existing EU legislation, but GDPR did mention (personal?) data portability already https://gdpr.eu/article-20-right-to-data-portability/ but maybe this is about the atproto communities seeing a natural way to building / expanding on that? Maybe this could create a more level playing field. Its different from explicitly backing this or that protocol and I suspect if it is taken up by policy makers such reference will be eliminated.

Yes, PDS directly refers to the ATProto stack, baking that protocol:
@smallcircles @z428 technology neutrality is a key aspect of EU legislation and I doubt it can be different in this case (assuming it is picked up as an agenda item at all 😅 ) https://interoperable-europe.ec.europa.eu/collection/common-assessment-method-standards-and-specifications-camss/solution/elap/technology-neutrality
@openrisk I'm completely unsure how the political side of things is going to work out, but I totally and fully back this idea of owning your data as in being able to reuse it elsewhere. And there's an awful load to be done here, even outside the walled gardens which of course have no interest to be extremely active here. But just considering: Moving with all your data between Mastodon instances? From Mastodon to Friendica? From Bluesky to Mastodon? From Diaspora* to Mastodon? This isn't just not working for LinkedIn and Instagram, it's not even working for the open web platforms. And that's a fail hard to understand or explain, all in all.
@openrisk
I just responed to a similar post by @z428 on a similar call. There's a more holistic / inclusive initiative at https://european.social than this one, which is about Eurosky.
