Speaking of, why does it say "QR code", surely "code QR" would be the correct word order. Like if we're just importing compounds with the English word order might as well just speak English. She says, about French, in English.
@chjara honestly that'd probably be thermos, escalator and an entire list's worth of drugs like aspirin and heroin
@charlotte@mastodon.ml @chjara@akko.tuxcrafting.xyz stares blankly in Germany the Aspirin trademark is alive and well and to get the generic you have to ask for ASS
@erincandescent @chjara to be fair it's also the same here except nobody calls it ass or acetylsalicylic acid. you buy acetylsalicylic acid by asking for "aspirin" but nobody will just fetch you Aspirin branded acetylsalicylic acid by default because it's more expensive for no good reason
@erincandescent @chjara all of these would be "aspirin" here despite the fact that bayer still own the trademark lol
@erincandescent @chjara im wondering if it's more cultural if anything. aspirin got genericized by treaty (and revolution in russia lol) after ww1 basically everywhere except germany. i think here they just re-registered the trademark after the union had collapsed, but you can't exactly tell everyone to stop using the brand at this point
@chjara i mean i guess it's because it's a trademark, not really a noun group, as funny as it is for something so ubiquitous. it's also "QR-код" in russian for this reason
