Hearing Apple devs complain about migrating to new APIs and gamedevs complain about engine upgrades makes me really glad the web platform has had almost no breaking changes… ever.
The original parts of HTML, CSS and JS from the 90s still work, even though we probably could benefit from undoing some of the bad parts. WebGL too (based on a 2007 standard).
The only notable broken part is Flash. Never officially part of the platform, but it was load-bearing regardless.
@jonikorpi @baldur Many load-bearing things did become part of the platform over time, like cookies, JavaScript, XMLHttpRequest, and local storage.
Microsoft did try to disrupt Flash with Silverlight, but that didn’t happen. CSS 3, WebGL, etc. were ultimately the standards-process approach to natively supporting what Flash provided.
