The team leaders and team members prove what it means for the community to take care of voting, to make sure the election is free and fair, to enable every eligible person to cast a ballot and feel safe doing so. Today, I saw in the team leaders’ faces the mix of tiredness, hope, and anxiety that this Election Day invites. I know my own face must have displayed the same mix, but also pride in what the Land of Action Election Watching effort has accomplished so far. 3/
We have been staring fascism and dictatorial authoritarianism in the face and doing all we can to fight back. We have lived our commitment to the fundamental practice in a democracy: free and fair elections. This is what a grassroots mobilization to protect democracy looks like. 4/
Along with the rest of the Free and Fair Elections NM26 team, Land of Action will be ready to continue election protection after tomorrow. #NewMexico progressives will be keeping an eye on the news and will be gathering publicly to respond, whether in celebration or protest. This afternoon, I had an Election-Day Eve call with people from across the state who are coordinating teams of watchers in their areas. They’ve been working for over a month, organizing, scheduling, watching during early voting, and now preparing to visit the many election locations that get added for Election Day. 2/
