YOU RENDER TEXT
THAT IS YOUR JOB
@thomholwerda isn't that basically X?
@thomholwerda My terminal isn't GPU accelerated as such, but it does have dedicated hardware to copy glyphs from the ROM into the scanout buffer (which is only big enough for one row because my FPGA doesn't have much memory), and also does the palette lookup for foreground/background color.
@thomholwerda Well yeah, if it just displays text, that's insane, however imagine we'd go the Videotex way and allow terminals to have multiplexed streams. So you have your text stream, plus additional streams for 2d and 3d vector graphics, perhaps video, perhaps audio. This would simplify a lot since you'd no longer need stuff like wayland or pulseaudio. It could all be handled with stdin/stdout.
It would be much more sane than using a browser for that.
@thomholwerda old terminals and computers did text rendering in dedicated hardware. YOU RENDER TEXT is a hard task to do quickly and efficiently
@thomholwerda are you sure about that?

@thomholwerda well if you pump some 10-20MB/s logging to the shell, some acceleration is nice...
@thomholwerda TEXT is not just ASCII. Rendering Unicode is not trivial.
