@eviloatmeal every sound in source engine has a gender because in half-life 2 they had two voice actors voice all of the citizens in the game
so when it's looking up what sound to play it asks "what gender is this character"
and because it was easier than creating an entirely separate system that did exactly the same thing, they just added eight genders to the game
