The Strange Occurrence on the Way to Starbase Twelve
Prologue
James Bond ran across the field to a small unguarded door on the side of the compound. Taking a lockpick and tension tool out of a jacket pocket, he picked the lock and slipped quietly inside. An unseen hand chopped down on the back of his neck. Bond fell to the floor, unconscious.

“Apparently,” Spock said, “Khan used you to test an early version of his cryonic preservation chambers.”
Spock continued. “I examined the logs Khan kept on the Botany Bay. Khan kept you as a kind of trophy. When the tide of the Eugenics War turned against him in 1996, Khan brought you with him on his escape ship the Botany Bay. It is not clear exactly why he ejected your cryo chamber. You drifted along the same general heading as the Botany Bay, which is why we found you.”
Captain Kirk explained how they found the Botany Bay and Khan, how he nearly captured the Enterprise, and how Kirk marooned Khan and his people on Ceti Alpha V.
“And you think he'll stay there?” Bond asked.
“We've issued a warning to Starfleet to make the system off limits. They haven't acknowledged yet but we expect they'll go along. Khan will be on his own for a long time.”
Dr. McCoy said, “So, Mr. Bond, you have some catching up to do. I don't think you need to stay in Sickbay."
Kirk agreed. “We'll let Starbase Twelve know to expect you. I think you'll be very popular with our historians.”
Bond smiled nervously.
