@ai6yr that boat would cost you less money if it had already sunk
@ozeng @ai6yr Given the harbor it's in (which I know well), it's actually not that scary looking.
Lately, the abandoned stuff in this harbor that isn't worth bringing back to life is just getting chopped up, since there's a local company now that does disposal. This *could* actually be a worthwhile project.
But it's not a free boat. It's a starting point for a long and expensive project. There are people that get into these things with a good understanding of what they're up to.
That'll clean right up. No problem.
But the transom itself might be rotted out and I'd bet money the motor is fried.
It's a Volvo, it'll be fine ;)
The underhull is rotting out. Give it a good, hard kick, and you'll have a shipwreck
@ai6yr @Wyatt_H_Knott @Zelda My brother owned a Bayliner in the 1990s. We eventually figured out that Bayliner was an acronym:
Broken
All
Year
Long
In
Need of
Expensive
Repairs
@Wyatt_H_Knott @ai6yr @Zelda Not a Bayliner story, but we had a family friend who owned a Columbia 41, hull #1. Incredibly capable and safe center-cockpit boat, but the engine had issues. One time it cut out just before we came back into Ventura Harbor. John, the owner, ex-Royal Australian Navy, said, “it’s a sailboat, isn’t it?” and ran up the mainsail. And so it was we navigated the harbor entrance, and docked, under full sail. I think half of the yacht club bought him drinks that day.
@larand @ai6yr @Zelda That's the kind of thing I used to do for fun. I was on a test drive of an Erickson 30 for a guy I used to work with. We took her out into Long Island Sound on the Detroit but once we got out I insisted we sail a bit. We jazzed around for awhile, I gave the boat my seal of approval, then he wanted to go in. So I sailed her up the Mystic River, through the dogleg, all the way up to the railway bridge before I let him turn the engine back on.
"It's a SAILBOAT." 😆
@larand @ai6yr @Zelda Similarly, took my mom and bro out in a rented dinghy on Lake Champlain one day. "Let's go upwind," sez I, and before long we're out of range of the horn the guy on the dock was trying to use to call us back. Had a leisurely downwind jog to get back, then turned it neatly into the slip, and dropped the main to coast right up to the dock. The guy was mad, but my mom said "oh he was in the Navy" and I had to laugh when the guy replied "they didn't teach him that in the Navy."
@ai6yr Ehh... some sandpaper and elbow grease will make that shine again.
😁
@ai6yr This really is much less of a fright pig than most free boats are. Not all faced years of neglect; sometimes ower dies or becomes incapacitated in some way, no family to take it over or ability to sell, marina takes over title to settle bill. Most of the time, they don't want to be brokers; they just want it gone.
The running engine may be what saves this thing.
@W6KME Ha, amazing if true. I'm use to them being horrible.
@ai6yr can’t help but think this is sorta like dating photos….
@ai6yr We *were* just talking about your need for marine plywood in that other thread.
This undoubtedly has plenty of it....
@mathaetaes LOL this boat seems like an attempt to offload the cost of paying for disposal 😂
@ai6yr yawhat I 'm literally about to go pick up a new old boat ... reads like a beautifull blueblack cat passing by ...
@ai6yr And that pic is from 1986.
@ai6yr hence the classic quote, "The most expensive boat you'll ever own is the one you got for free."
Next photo they have posted. 😱
I know nothing about boats, but that looks... bad.
