@PapyrusBrigade Living in a part of Toronto built in the early 1920's, most of the institutional buildings in the area date from that era.
And while the neo-liberal cuts to education have been going on for decades, it's really quite awful now and getting much worse.
Also, the newly elected school board trustees in areas where the province has established a provincial dictatorship, aren't allowed to do anything at all.
@leftylabourtech Ugh, the muzzled school trustees! I'm baffled by what Ford is able to get away with.
@PapyrusBrigade The interesting thing in Toronto is that the more progressive left elements swept all 10 of the TDSB's disempowered school trustee seats.
@PapyrusBrigade I think that Ford will be able to get away with shit as long as the level of push back is relatively low level from labour and social/community movements.
What was useful about the Etobicoke bike lane protests, is that it was a "higher level" of protest than what we normally see. Also the education support workers.
In the 1990's there was much stronger push back against Mike Harris than there has been against Doug Ford.
@leftylabourtech Schools generally are such an infuriating issue in Ontario:
- The province skimps on maintenance, so old buildings (many of them heritage) fall into disrepair. Eventually reaching the point where its cheaper to tear down and start over.
- Looking at the grand school buildings of the 1920s, we glimpse an era when education was prized.
- Public education is dying from a thousand cuts. Music and art programs cut long ago. No textbooks. Special ed assistants cut. Teachers burnt out.
