AI gets a lot of blame... but like the current economic cliff America is falling off is 400years in the making and has next to nothing at all to do with technology.
Its the systemic racism coming home to roost.
It's the end stage of manifest destiny.
It's just what happens to settler colonies when capitalist expansion -FUELED- by slavery runs out of growth curve.
None of that is AI.
It's rally just the slavery capitalism.
We built an economy on razing Native lands, plowing them with slaves to design and build vast amounts of infrastructure before continuing that process supressing Black economics until migration and ALSO suppressing migrants economics as we NOW see on full display.
Meanwhile the middle class was picked CLEAN by the credit card companies in the 80s, then housing, academic and medical lending+insurance.
THEN we told millennials to move around like pioneers on wagon train but NOW with degrees and social media validation that the self made BOSS without community, ethics or conscience is the road to economic freedom. Just add loans until you make it...
The simple act of moving large distances for work and school alone severs MANY people's community and that communities intelligence (brain drain USA is everytown USA).
And we stand back and wonder why job losses mount went corporations fail...
@nullagent I don't often respond to your threads, because you don't need my help making your point and I don't want to distract from the things that you're saying.
But, once again, you've nailed it. AI or not, this is where we were always headed. This is the natural progression of centuries of racism and classism and theft and exploitation.
I appreciate the reminder that systemic problems will require addressing the whole system.
The kicker and yes the part I blame tech... its SaaS.
SaaS has done more to deliver the ACTUAL automation desrroying the job market right now.
If tech had a role... these are just the benefits of the following tech being used in business:
- computers
- the internet
- internet based payments
THATs IT.
That's all it took to get us right here after that 400 years of NEVER fucking learning how to build resilient local economies.
This was the same effect Walmart scaling had on small towns.
To pretty much ANY of the economic crises facing America my careful economic suggestion is this:
- Reparations to Black Americans now
- Landback to Native tribes
If we STARTED there... there's about million dimensions of economic churn and instability right out of the system.
Done right, it'd trigger a crazy amount of economic activity and is the missing capital & resources needed for ordinary circular economics.
